In Belize, there's a place called the Pier Lounge which hosts an unusual game of chance each night called the "Chicken Drop". It's a simple concept really. You go to the lobby of the hotel and purchase a random number. Then .......
You can't make this stuff up.
See you tonight.

Follow the daily interactions of an affable bar manager of pretty cool and not-so-typical watering hole in NYC, in a not-so-typical neighborhood, Murray Hill. There may be some blurbs overheard at the bar, stimulating observations and random thoughts on random things. So be careful, you never know what might end up here....Enjoy and welcome to my world!

"NO-JUICE JANUARY"
It's January 7 and I am kicking "No-Juice January" into high gear. For those of you who are somewhat out of the loop, "No-Juice January" is that time of year when I take a month off from the booze to "detox" and start the year fresh (not that I am a big drinker to begin with). It's a yearly ritual that I've been doing for a long time now and it comes in handy after the long holiday season.
I borrowed the idea from THE DON years ago when I first started working at Third and Long and I look forward to it every January. Ironically enough, the hardest part of "No-Juice January" is when folks try to buy you a drink and you have to decline. Some take offense to being snubbed and then I have to explain "No-Juice January" to them, after which they become more understanding. Sometimes it can be a bit boring, especially when everyone else is getting their drink on during a celebration, but you keep your eyes on the prize. Luckily for me, "No-Juice January" ends on Feb 1, which is Super Bowl Sunday. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the fast.
So, 6 days down, 24 days to go......

MURRAY HILL: THE NEW WILLIAMSBURG?
The last couple of nights I couldn't help but to notice a subtle change in the crowds we've been attracting at the bar. Normally I'm used to seeing the typical Murray Hill set, consisting of frat boys, "bromance" buddies and girls who wear the exact same outfits like Stepford Wives.
However, the last few nights have brought about more individualistic types who you might find in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; the "Hipster" types. Unshaven, tight v-neck sweaters and jeans on guys, more off-beat type of outfits on the ladies (this observation was also shared by FRENCHY, who didn't mind making his feelings known about the subtle changes). More about having a drink and having conversations as opposed to fawning about, hoping to be seen or admired. Not so concerned about drink prices and haggling over buybacks like our typical Murray Hill counterparts. LITMUS TEST: When someone orders a Delirium Tremens to look cool, then making a twisted French face when they find out the cost, chances are they are a Murray Hiller. Where as the past few nights, these newfound "hipsters" would order the Delirium without batting an eye, and come back for seconds and even thirds. Interesting.
I'm not sure if it's a temporary thing; if it's simply folks being home from college for the holidays or what, but this bears observing. I'll keep you posted. Maybe the "Hill" is finally starting to get a hint of "hipness" after all. At least in the eyes of the rest of New York.

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR....
Last night we witnessed what turned out to be a thrilling game between the TEXAS LONGHORNS and the OHIO STATE BUCKEYES in the Fiesta Bowl. Going into the game, the Longhorns were an eight point favorite as the Buckeyes were the decided underdogs, much in part due to a lackluster performance in the national spotlight the past few years. As a huge Buckeyes fan myself, even I was resigned to the fact that the Ohio State team was doomed going into this game.
However, I was pleasantly surprised (as well as most of you) to see the Buckeyes take it to the heavily favored Longhorns for most of the game. It was a tough battle throughout and if it wasn't for a fluke mishap on the Buckeyes part with 16 seconds left in the game, the Longhorns would have lost that game and their hopes for a share of the National Championship. A thrilling finish to a great game. So as much as it hurts to see the Buckeyes lose (yet again), at least this time around they made a fine showing for themselves. TEXAS 24, OSU 21.
Also taking place last night was the finals of the World Junior Hockey Championships, pitting Team Canada vs Team Sweden. This game wasn't as close or as thrilling as the host Canadian team simply dismantled their counterparts, 5-1 and claiming the gold medal in the process. It will be interesting to see how many members of this young team make it to the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver next February, as they will probably be the team to beat.
Speaking of hockey, with football slowly winding down for the year, we will be bringing our focus back to the hardcore winter sports, which in our case includes NHL hockey, College and Pro Basketball. Look out for upcoming promoBlogger: The Diary of Third and Long - Edit Post "Tuesday, January 6, 2009"tions featuring these sports.
TONIGHT: "Dollar Draft Madness", featuring $1.00 mugs of Bud/Bud Light and Bud American Ale ALL NIGHT LONG!

CAN YOU SAY Sayonara?
Yesterday we experienced the largest gathering of Miami Dolphins fans yet as they gathered in anticipation of a big playoff win. However, gaining their first playoff victory in years would be a giant task as they faced the Baltimore Ravens and their intimidating defense.

The Dol-Fans were greeted by the 2Michelles ("Tall Michelle" and "Short Michelle") as they were decorating the viewing area with Dolphins paraphernalia. They also conducted video interviews and shout-outs to all of their fans of their website.
By the time the game started, we had probably about 40 or so hardcore color-wearing Dol-Fans in the house.
After the first quarter, the Dol-Fans had reason to hope as they kept close to their opponent with the score tied 3-3. However, things began to go south for their beloved Dolphins during the second quarter as Chad Pennington began to show signs of his former self. He ended up throwing at least four interceptions and that led the team towards their eventual demise. The upstart Dolphins would finally end their miracle run, 27-9.

Though the Dolphins were ceremoniously bounced by the Ravens, it was a great run for a team that finished 1-15 the year before. They were very entertaining and brought a lot of fresh energy to the Sunday Fun-Day madness (both the team and the fans). As much as we joke about them being "The Cult" and such, they were a fun bunch and on behalf of the bar, I welcome them back with open arms next season. Good stuff. Check out the rest of the photos on our FACEBOOK page!

While this was taking place, the rest of the Brew Crew used the opportunity to play some "games of chance" involving the scores of the games. Each quarter of the game provided us with an opportunity to win some moola and of course, being red-blooded Americans with nothing better to do with their hard-earned money, we took full advantage of it..... And as always, to the victor goes the spoils.
The second game was pretty exciting in its own right, however, it lacked the wattage of the first game and as a result, the afternoon ended on a whimper instead of a roar. Oh well, you can't rock the house all the time!
Next week's matchups:
Saturday: Tennessee vs Baltimore, Arizona vs Carolina
Sunday: NY Giants vs Philadelphia, San Diego vs Pittsburgh
TONIGHT: "Recession Mondays", FIESTA BOWL-STYLE! Featuring $1.00 Bud, Coors Light and Bud Light MUGS, and $2.00 MUGS of all other DOMESTIC DRAFTS, from 4pm-close!!! Don't forget to catch CANADA vs SWEDEN (World Juniors Hockey Championships, 7:30pm) and TEXAS vs OHIO STATE at 8pm!

NEW YEAR'S EVE RECAP
Leave it to BABY GIRL to throw a fun party. She and her brothers, THURSTON HOWELL, the 3RD and THE COOLEST MUTHA F***ER I KNOW, hosted an "pajama-themed' New Year's Eve party that left the guests wanting more by the end of the night. Even though Mother Nature didn't cooperate with the party's theme by blasting us with frigid temperatures, some folks still braved the elements and showed up in sleepwear, as per the theme of the event.
This was a fun filled affair that only BABY GIRL could pull off. What made it more remarkable was the fact that she was sick as all hell and pulled herself out of her sick bed to make it to her own party. Talk about a trooper!
It was one fun party!
