HOLLA, HOLLA, DOLLA, DOLLA!

Don't forget about Murray Hill's longest running beer special!

And before I forget, I'd like to send out a HAPPY BIRTHDAY shoutout to our dear friend, T-BILL, who's celebrating with lunch at the White House (yes, that one) as we speak!

KUDOS and WAKE UP CALLS....

Yesterday I got an email from a dear friend of mine who is about to embark on a life-changing challenge. He recently turned 40 and after some prodding from family and friends who were concerned about his health, has decided to lose weight. And knowing his love/weakness for food, he has decided to embark on a challenge that will make him commit to his goal of losing weight over the next three months, while at the same time, raising money for charity. Each pound he loses, his friends will donate a dollar amount towards his charity of choice. While I applaud him for what he's about to do, it also made me look at myself and think about the changes that I need to make for my own well-being.

Now anyone will tell you that attempting any kind of lifestyle change is difficult, especially as one gets older. But reality kicks in for all of us sooner or later and if one doesn't take the time or make the effort to do right by themselves, they could become "past-tense", for lack of a better term. With the recent rash of deaths of prominent individuals both young and old and now looking at what my buddy is attempting to do, I can't help but to look at myself in the mirror and step up to the plate.

I commend my friend for what he's about to embark on and hopefully I will find the same support system to help push me towards my own personal wellness goals. Good luck buddy!

HALFWAY THROUGH.....

After what turned out to be a gorgeous Fourth of July weekend, we find ourselves halfway through the summer. Where has the time gone? I know for us New Yorkers, we were robbed of a lot of our summer due to the massive amounts of rain we received in June. With that in mind, it was no wonder that the city was so empty this weekend. It seems that everyone JUMPED at the chance to get out of the city and enjoy the beautiful weather, seeing that we've had so few of them of late.

Yours truly found himself working both Friday and Saturday, so I didn't really have much to show for the holiday weekend. As quiet as it was over the weekend, I still found it to be enjoyable. It brought me back to the old summer nights at Third and Long when the staff would sit outside the bar on our barstools and take in the foot traffic that would walk by. We'd talk about the events of the day, check out the tourists and try to guess where they were from; It was relaxing and fun, but then again, it was a different time back then, even if it was only 10-15 years ago. One thing's for sure: we are definitely in a different mindset these days.

Now that we're at the halfway point of the summer season, here's hoping we'll get some cooperation from Mother Nature and make up for was was basically a waste of a month of June. Keep your fingers crossed!

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND!

As we roll into the holiday weekend, Manhattan seems to be a shell of itself as it's pretty apparent that the exodus out of town has gotten under way. Just got back from the bar and there are a few sad souls who actually had to work today and are drowning their sorrows during their lunch hour. The weather gods are making up for yesterday's clusterfuck of a day (sunny one hour, downpour the next, sunny one hour, more rain the next), and that bodes well for a fun weekend. The Yankees are playing a rare Friday afternoon game and Wimbledon is winding down; yes the summer season is indeed in high gear.

Last night turned out to be a pretty good night, in spite of the crazy weather. While a lot of folks began their long weekend in earnest, a lot of folks chose to stick around and make the best of their last night with work buddies before the holiday break. Lots of new faces and definitely lots of debauchery taking place. We ended up getting out pretty late but it was worth it as everyone seemed to have a good time. Our HEINEKEN LIGHT promo went well, even though it started out a bit late and the models they sent us were, shall we say, a bit wacky? That being said, they were personable enough to keep the patrons' attention.

We'll be open today as well as July 4th, so make sure to check out our WEBSITE for our great drink specials and activities during the holiday weekend! So for those of you who chose to stay in town this weekend, you know where to go....

So as we head into the holiday break, let us keep our thoughts and minds on the young men and women who continue to keep our shores safe and are fighting the good fight overseas. And also remember those who lost their lives to allow us to enjoy the things we sometimes take for granted as a part of our freedom.

Enjoy the weekend!

THE HOLIDAY EXODUS HAS ARRIVED...

4th of July falls on a Saturday this year and as a result, many of you will be taking off to parts unknown (I've always loved that term), beginning today. Most of you have Friday off so it makes sense to take off today to squeeze in an extra day of R & R. With the economy being what it is, I'm intrigued to see how many people actually leave the area this year. Sure you'll have the usual trek to the Hamptons or the Jersey Shore, but I get the feeling that longer jaunts will be minimal this time around. Folks are going to be a bit more creative in their holiday celebrating.

One big change this year: The Macy's Fireworks Show will be on the Hudson River as opposed to its normal place on the East River. This gives the folks on the West Side of Manhattan, New Jersey and to an extent, Staten Island a great show while the East Siders, Queens, Bronx and most of Brooklyn will be out of luck. Oh well, when you're dealt lemons, you make lemonade. Hopefully the weather gods will cooperate and give us a good weekend.

Pub Trivia brought us a lot of new faces, which is always welcomed. We always appreciate the regulars who come by week after week; but it's always good to see new blood to bring some competition to the Trivia game. This week's theme was USA, in honor of the upcoming Independence Day Weekend. Among the new faces: lots of hotties and of course, I always welcome that.

Guess who won? ANGEL and her crew (aptly named "Billy Mays Hayes"). Good job by them and for winning, they qualify for the upcoming Tournament of Champions in August. Hopefully they will be around by then to compete.

Check out the pics on our FACEBOOK page!

Check out our website for the weekend's schedule of fun, fun, fun!!! In the meantime, check out "Thirsty Thursdays" tonight, featuring buckets of Coors Light or Miller Lite, 5/$15 (5-9pm); Followed by $4.00 Domestic Draft pints the rest of the night. There's also a Heineken Light promo (9pm) featuring the Heineken Light ladies, spreading good cheer and swag!

B TO THE B, one of our diligent blog readers, hanging out in his wading pool on his deck in Milwaukee, WI.

If any regulars have any pics they want to share with the rest of us, feel free to email them and I'll post them on the blog.

Enjoy!

WHERE DID OUR SUMMER GO?

Today is July 1 and it feels like summer is flying by yet I don't feel as if we have anything to show for it. Maybe it's because of all of the rain we've gotten in June- it has definitely robbed us of some good weekends. Oh well, I guess it means that we (or at least I) have to make up for it by having a stellar July/August. Hmmmm... What can I do to achieve that? As I let the hamster wheel turn on that one I can say that I had the pleasure of getting visits from a couple "Blasts from the Past" yesterday. First on the list was ANGEL, one of our original SUNDAY BREW CREW members. She moved away back in April and has been traveling/studying in Europe for the last few months. She's in town for the holiday weekend and she looked very tan and great! It was great listening to her adventures during her stay there and she's still as funny as ever.

Later in the evening, in the midst of a crowded and sweaty bar who emerges from the crowd, looking like Billy Dee Williams (without the hair), cool as a cucumber? None other than GOLDIE, another original member of the SUNDAY BREW CREW! Turns out he's in town on business and decided to pop in with a client. He's looking well and fatherhood has treated him well. He has a beautiful baby daughter and she's the light of his life. Good stuff.

Speaking of the evening, I was worried about the prospects of our evening due to the nice little rainstorm we received right around rush hour (surprise, surprise). However, the rain gods let up and the bar soon filled up with thirsty interns and tourists and it turned out to be a good night after all. Earlier in the day I had the AC unit cleaned out and thank god I did because it came in handy as the bar reached capacity.

Here's an interesting observation: I often hang out near the stairwell, usually to observe the happenings of the bar but also to make sure no one takes a tumble down the stairs as they go to the bathroom. While we have signs posted letting folks know to watch their step, I like to make sure to tell folks to be careful anyway. Every so often when I say to someone "Be careful when going down the stairs", I'll get a frown or a smart comment from that patron. And sure enough, more often than not that same person ends up on their ass. Interesting how that works out.

Another observation: More and more, I'm starting to notice more fashion trends skewing towards to 80's retro look and I gotta be honest, I'm not liking it one bit. Some trends need to be left in the past.

PUB TRIVIA is in effect tonight with this week's theme being USA, in honor of upcoming 4th of July holiday weekend. Registration starts at 7pm, fun starts at 8 and as always, it's free to play with great prizes to be had! Winning team also qualifies for the upcoming Tournament of Champions in August! See you tonight!

Speaking of trivia, here's a link I came across that might be interesting for you trivia lovers out there: CLICK HERE.

BEER OF THE MONTH: SIXPOINT CRAFT ALE!

AND FINALLY: I can't end this post without wishing all of my friends from the north a very happy CANADA DAY! Jour heureux du Canada!

See you tonight.
