PUB TRIVIA RETURNS!

Last night marked the return of Pub Trivia and it was a successful return. Many familiar faces made their way back to the bar after what seemed like the longest hiatus, and quite a few new faces showed up as well.

The theme of last night's Trivia was "The 2000's", with questions highlighting events of the past decade. Of course, there were some interesting team names floating about, many of them making reference to Tiger Woods, Gilbert Arenas' recent gun troubles and other noteworthy celebs in the news (the staff team name was "Casey's Trust Fund Babies".... d'oh!). The team names are always interesting because many of them walk the fine line between funny and cruel (and that line sometimes can be very fine)...

During the course of the night we got a visit from three lovely ladies, representing the upcoming Pro Bull Riders tour (PBR). They stopped by the bar to promote the upcoming event at Madison Square Garden this weekend.

"Ride 'em Cowgirls!"

They took photographs with the guys in the crowd and passed out fliers for the event. Nice girls. I actually wouldn't mind checking out the bullriding event as I've only seen it on TV. I bet it's probably a blast to see it live.

Throughout the night we kept getting phone calls regarding the upcoming Jets/Bengals game. Folks are already calling for reservations! I got a feeling this Saturday is going to be nuts.

Overall, the return of pub trivia was a successful one. I, for one, am glad to see its return.

USA! USA! USA!

Last night we hosted the live telecast of the IIHF World Juniors Hockey Gold Medal game between CANADA and USA. Going into the finals, both teams were dominant in the tournament; CANADA was undefeated and USA suffered only one loss: to CANADA in a shootout a few days prior. In that game, Team USA actually had a two goal lead late in the game, only to see Team CANADA roar back to tie the game and send it into overtime. Team CANADA would eventually win the game in a shootout. Last night's final would prove to be just as exciting.

Just like their previous matchup, both teams went at each other with guns ablazing, scoring quickly and often. Eventually Team USA would hold a 5-3 lead late in the 3rd period when the unthinkable happened: Team CANADA would roar back to tie the game and send it into overtime again! Would this be deja vu? Would Team CANADA find a way to steal victory and the gold medal? Not this time. Team USA's John Carlson would unleash a sniper shot heard round the hockey world in overtime to lead Team USA to an improbable 6-5 win and the Gold Medal for the first time since 2004. A thrilling finish to a thrilling game, bringing smiles to USA fans at the bar and a look of shock for the Canadians in attendance.

TONIGHT: The return of WEDNESDAY NIGHT PUB TRIVIA after a brief hiatus. Round up the troops and bring them down for an evening of friendly competition where bragging rights and cool prizes are up for grabs! Team registration begins at about 7pm and the fun starts at around 8pm. Free to play but get there early as prime seating locations tend to fill up quickly!

SHIVER ME FECKIN' TIMBERS...

I'm writing this post at 3:17 am. Why do you ask? Because it's so friggin' cold that I have to do something to keep warm. It's 21 degrees outside, doesn't feel that much warmer inside, though I hear something akin to the sounds of heat trying to make its way through my radiators. Bottom line: It's cold. There's no other way around it. The whole country is being handicapped by the wicked arctic chill blowing in from our neighbors to the north and it seems that no one has been spared by its wrath. In Cleveland, Ohio (my former home), they are being hit by crazy snow along with the brutally cold temps; so I guess I should count my blessings that I don't have to deal with shoveling snow on top of this crap we're already dealing with. It doesn't make me feel any better though.

I took some time to stop by the bar earlier in the evening to catch the BINGO STUD and his Beer Bingo gig. It was our first night back with the Bingo gig since Monday Night Football ended and it attracted a decent crowd for a frigid night.

The patrons who were there seemed to be into the spirit of Beer Bingo, especially when winning free beer was involved. I eventually left because I wanted to get some more work done, but later found myself regretting it because, quite frankly, it was much more comfortable in the bar than in my apartment. Oh well.

I'm in the process of planning out the rest of the month's worth of activities and we have some cool things planned for the next few months. Stay tuned to see what's on tap. In the meantime, Pub Trivia makes a return this Wednesday with new topics, questions and prizes to spread around to everyone! We also have the NFL playoffs to focus on, especially with the local team, the NY Jets in the running for Super Bowl glory.

With that, I'm going to try and get some sleep and some warmth.

DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS tonight with $1 Bud/Bud Light mugs, the Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech vs Iowa, 8pm) and the big matchup between USA/CANADA in the gold medal game of the World Junior Hockey Championships (8pm).

KICKING OFF THE NEW DECADE...

The holidays unleashed a flurry of activity at the bar, with busy nights throughout, from Christmas through New Year's Weekend. With the number of folks being in NYC for the holidays, we were the benefactors of plenty of good nights.

Now that the New Year has successfully kicked off and New Year's Eve celebrated, we're waking up to the realization that it's back to the old grind. I'm pretty sure that you must have a pretty difficult time going back to work today. I'm certainly having a difficult time getting back into the day-to-day routine, that's for sure. At least we have the NFL playoffs to get us through the month of January.

Speaking of the NFL Playoffs, the NY Jets pulled off the improbable feat and made their way into the playoffs as the #5 seed, defeating the third-string team of the Cincinnati Bengals, 37-0 last night, in what was the last football game played at Giants Stadium. It capped off a crazy day of Week 17 action in which the playoff seedings weren't determined until literally the last game of the season.

The DOLFANS NYC fan club found disappointment as their Miami Dolphins were one of the teams that found themselves on the outside looking in at the end of the day, thanks to their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a strange twist of fate, however, the Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves on the outside looking in later in the day, being knocked out of playoff contention, thanks to their rivals, the Baltimore Ravens.

So here are the matchups for the first round of the NFL Playoffs:

SATURDAY, JAN 9, 2009

NY Jets vs Cincinnati Bengals (4:30pm)
Philadelphia Eagles vs Dallas Cowboys (8pm)

SUNDAY, JAN, 10, 2009

Baltimore Ravens vs New England Patriots (1pm)
Green Bay Packers vs Arizona Cardinals (4pm)

Three out of the four matchups are rematches from Week 17; I don't think that's ever happened before. Should be interesting to see if the results are the same this time around.

There are plenty of pictures from Brew Crew Sunday, Week 17 as well as New Year's Eve posted on our FACEBOOK page. Check them out and if you haven't already done so, become a friend of Third and Long while you're there!

TONIGHT: MUG NIGHT MADNESS is in effect tonight, featuring the return of BEER BINGO! Free to play and plenty of cool prizes to win! $2 Domestic Draft Mugs OR $1 Bud/Bud Light/Coors Light mugs ALL NIGHT LONG!
