SURVIVING THE HEATWAVE....

Yesterday we suffered through what easily must have been the HOTTEST day of my 25+ year existence here in New York City. Depending on what weather report you believe, the temps SOARED up to 103 degrees yesterday, unheard of, even for the Big Apple.

Throughout the day I worried about what the weather would do to our AC unit. While we recently had the system repaired, I still couldn't help but to worry about how it would react to such extreme temps. It was a nightmare to walk around for more than two blocks because by the time you reached your destination, you would be drenched in sweat. I tried to stay inside the bar as much as possible and lucky for us, the AC handled itself well.

The afternoon's highlight was the thrilling NETHERLANDS/URUGUAY World Cup match. An enthusiastic crowd showed up for the big match and they weren't disappointed as the Orange took a commanding 3-1 lead only to make things interesting at the end of the match. They ended up giving up a last-minute goal and kept everyone at the bar on the edge of their seats up until the final whistle blew. I personally enjoyed the victory as it allowed me to clinch a World Cup pool, much to the dismay of the so-called "experts" who finished below me.

Going into "Dollar Draft Madness", I was concerned about how the AC would hold up on a busy night. Fortunately (or maybe not so fortunate, depending on the point of view), the bar wasn't as packed as usual so the place felt comfortable throughout the night. The heatwave obviously kept folks off of the streets, that's for sure.

We did get a visit towards the end of the night from a member of the Cincinnati Reds, outfielder LANCE NIX, who wandered in solo after the game. He and his team were in town to play the NY Mets and are probably staying nearby. He had a couple beers and left, only to return later for another quick beer before strolling off into the night. He's a big boy, by the way.

So we ended up surviving through Day 2 of the "Big Apple Heatwave", with no major problems. Today, however, is another day. Temps are expected to reach the mid-upper 90's (again), so we'll see what transpires.

GERMANY vs SPAIN highlights the afternoon and the phone has been ringing off the hook for reservations for this match. Kickoff is set for about 2:30pm $4 drafts throughout the match!

PUB TRIVIA kicks off at 8:30pm tonight with $4 Mixed Well Drinks (for ladies), $5 Kopperberg Cider bottles and $15 Miller High Life buckets all night long! Great prizes available and as always, it's FREE to play! So swing by with a group of friends and form a team!

DAMN!

That will be the common theme amongst New Yorkers today as they set outside to find themselves literally in the depths of hell. If you haven't figured it out by now, we're in the midst of a massive heatwave that promises to make our lives miserable for the rest of the week. Temperatures will hover around 100 degrees today and tomorrow before scaling back to a modest 98 on Thursday. They say "relief" will come by the weekend as temps should fall to the upper 80's. Yay.

To make matters worse, whenever we get heatwaves such as the current one, we have to worry about brownouts or even worse, the occasional blackout (when areas of the city loses electrical power due to overuse of electricity on air conditioners and other cooling devices). That is something we DO NOT need! So please conserve energy by shutting off all unnecessary appliances and light switches. Every little bit helps.

To illustrate how hot it is out there, I took a walk to the post office a little while ago. Walked one block and was literally dripping in sweat by the time I arrived at the post office. It's brutal out there, folks.

And to make matters worse, we're on gridlock alert today as the Queen of England makes her first visit to NYC in over 30 years today. She will be visiting Ground Zero to lay a wreath to honor British citizens who died on 9/11. The Queen will be making other appearances in the area before making her way to the U.N. to address the General Assembly. I hope she can handle this heat!

Aren't you glad the long holiday weekend's over?

In any case, you will probably find me at the bar this afternoon (hey, they have better AC than I do), catching up on bar work and preparing for the major World Cup semi-final matchup between URUGUAY vs NETHERLANDS (1:30pm). It should be an interesting match to say the least!
DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS TONIGHT! Hoping to keep cool after work? Let our dollar mugs of Bud/Bud Light help you out! Even if you still find yourself sweating it out after more than a few mugs, you can always pretend you're cool.

ARE YOU A SPARTAN?

Do you think you have what it takes to be a SPARTAN? Not the kind Russell Crowe portrayed in GLADIATOR (though I'm willing to bet some of you think you could), mind you but someone tough enough to handle the obstacle course of all obstacle courses? Well think about this: A 5k run with an obstacle course to tackle along the way that would make your toughest triathlete cringe. We're talking about the SPARTAN RACE!

Think about it. This could be a personal test to see what you're made of, or a group effort where the motto "All for one and one for all" actually means something. In any case, it ain't for the faint of heart and it will provide you with a challenge unlike any other.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you do decide to take on this test of endurance, you'll also be helping out a good cause as $10 of your entry fee will be donated to the I WILL FOUNDATION.

So gather the troops and sign up now for this unique event! Find out once and for all, what you're made of! Click on the link for more details and entry form! The Spartan Race is a race unlike no other!

FINALLY! THE WEEKEND'S HERE!

It's Friday of the long 4th of July Weekend and I'm at the bar already, taking in the BRAZIL/NETHERLANDS quarter-final match. It's a little over ten minutes in and already, BRAZIL's up 1-0 (crap- I have the NETHERLANDS advancing in my pool). I'm still half-asleep from working the night before and trying to wrap my head around highlights from last night and what to expect for the long holiday weekend.

The mass exodus out of town started early as droves of cars snaked up 3rd Avenue, leading into the Midtown Tunnel- a sure sign that folks are getting out of Dodge. That left me wondering whether or not the bar would be busy later in the evening. Usually the Thursday before a long weekend is a busy night as friends and co-workers party hard before departing for parts unknown (I've always liked that term).

This time around, however, the mass exodus must have taken a lot of the revelers with them because 3rd Avenue turned out to be much tamer than normal for a typical Thursday night. While we had our share of hits, it wasn't nearly as busy as one would have liked going into a long weekend. There were some highlights, however, that made the night interesting. For example:

A young lady wearing a somewhat short but loose-fitting skirt was walking down the street. Little did she know, the purse that she was carrying to her side had accidentally hiked up her skirt to the point where you could see her butt-cheek hanging out from under it in full view. Now that presented me with a dilemma: Do I say something to her about it? I didn't want her to think I was a creep or something by pointing out the obvious. Was she purposely showing off the goodies or did she genuinely not notice that her ass was in full view of the public eye?

Before I got a chance to play hero/creep, she dipped into the woman's clothing boutique across the street and moments later, she came out with her skirt properly adjusted. Catastrophe averted.

Then there were the two TALL, leggy young models from Ireland who walked in later in the evening. For starters, they were pretty TALL and hot, not the traits that I normally see from females of the Emerald Isle. No offense to the ladies of Ireland. While you have your share of beautiful women, it's rare that I see 'em TALL and HOT at the same time.

In any case, when they walked in, the whole place got quiet; I think all of the guys were just as stunned as I was at how hot these chicks were. They casually walked up to the bar, ordered a drink and sat to themselves at a table, seemingly aware that the whole room was focused on them. I think the awkward stares eventually got to them as they polished off their drinks and quickly left. I swear, you'd think by now my bartenders would have seen a hot chick or two before by now.

Then you had the countless number of folks who came by our place looking for Canada Day festivities, only to find that we didn't have anything scheduled (I'm still trying to recover from our Quebec Day Bash). Note to self: Put Canada Day on my planning calendar for next year.

WEEKEND HAPPENINGS: The long weekend presents us with a few options. The WORLD CUP resumes today with BRAZIL vs NETHERLANDS (currently airing), followed by URUGUAY vs GHANA (2pm).

The NY YANKEES play a rare Friday day game vs the Toronto Blue Jays (1pm).

The "Weekend Kickoff" officially begins at 5pm with $4 Domestic Drafts/Mixed Well Drinks (5-9pm)!

SATURDAY: World Cup action continues with a HUGE matchup featuring ARGENTINA vs GERMANY (10am), followed by SPAIN vs PARAGUAY (2pm)! $2 mugs, all beers on tap (except premium brands) highlights our famous "Kick the Keg" Saturdays (12-7pm).

UFC 116: LESNAR vs CARWIN is the main event of the night as we'll be airing the PPV event live, beginning at 9pm! NO COVER CHARGE for the event; NO RESERVATIONS taken, it's first-come, first serve, so get here early!

We will be CLOSED on July 4th and re-open on Monday, July 5th at 4pm! Have a safe and fun holiday weekend!

A special thanks to THE DON on the beautiful sunrise photo I'm currently using. As always, if you ever want to submit a photo related to Third and Long, feel free to do so and I'll post 'em!

LET THE PIGEONS LOOSE!

It's the start of a new month and not just any month; It's July 1. A lot of significance with this particular date. In business speak, it's the start of the fiscal year. More importantly to me, however, July 1 is the start of FREE AGENCY in both the NBA and the NHL. This year's free agency period in the NBA seems to have everyone in a frenzy, more so than in particular years due to the bumper crop of free agents who are now on the market. The list of players is remarkable and it includes the likes of:

LEBRON JAMES
DWAYNE WADE
CHRIS BOSH
AMARE'E STOUDEMIRE
JOE JOHNSON
PAUL PIERCE

just to name a few. Teams have been positioning themselves for this moment for the past three years and as of midnight July 1, they are now allowed to make their pitch to woo these free agents over to their respective teams. There hasn't been this much recruiting by teams and their respective cities since.... ever! Celebrities and politicians have even gotten into the act. It's gotten that crazy! I'm sure more than one person will be keeping their eyes glued to the Internet and the ESPN ticker to see where their favorite free agent will end up. Stay tuned...

LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND EXODUS begins in earnest tomorrow, though I'm sure many of you will try to stretch it out by leaving after work today. This is traditionally a good night for the bars as many folks will get their last bit of partying in with their co-workers before heading off to their respective vacation spots for the long holiday weekend. We're ready for ya, so bring your "A-Game"!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST NIGHT'S PUB TRIVIA:

As always, good times had by all.

Keeping it brief today as the Yankees are playing the first of what will be an unusual four-game set in which every game will be played at 1pm. Yes, all day games this weekend, beginning today.

And of course, I couldn't complete this post without wishing our friends to the north a very HAPPY CANADA DAY!

More to come.
