"THE LONG RUN" BOOK RELEASE PARTY

I've received many requests regarding the date of the book release and if there were going to be a book release party associated with "The Long Run". This should answer any questions regarding the upcoming book release. We'd love to see as many of Matt's supporters at the event and as you can see, the book release party is also a fundraiser for the I Will Foundation. A good time will be had by all and of course, all proceeds will be going to a great cause!

ENJOYING A BRIEF "STAYCATION"..

Labor Day Weekend in Murray Hill was as I expected, a generally mellow one. With the hype of Hurricane Earl looming over us all week, I thought that maybe, just maybe, we would have more bodies laying low in the city, at least for one night. However, Earl turned out to be a bust, and as a result, the mass exodus out of the city took place without incident. That left us with a pretty dead Friday night.

On the other hand, Saturday turned out to be pretty busy, between the attraction of the U.S. Open, college football and a Fantasy Football draft dominating the afternoon and the stream of tourists and bachelorette parties throughout the night. It was like the polar opposite of Friday night. Weekend salvaged.

The bar was closed on Sunday, affording me my last Sunday off until February (thanks to football season). And since I didn't get a real vacation this Summer, I did the next best thing: I went to the Brazilian Day Festival over by Times Square. Hey, if you can't go to Brazil, let Brazil come to you. I love going to this event because it isn't like your typical cookie-cutter street fair you find dotted all over Manhattan every weekend. This festival has it all: great food dishes from Brazil, live music from multiple stages, dancing everywhere; You literally feel like you're at Carnival! Truly a sight to behold.

This was going on from West 42nd to West 57th Street. And at the epicenter of it all, Little Brazil (West 46th).. it was sheer chaos.... in a fun way!

Talk about colorful! All of the five senses were given a full workout at the festival!

My future mode of transportation!

So while my plans of summer traveling went bust, this was a nice way to make up for it. Best of all, at the end of the day, I come home, to the comforts of my own bed! Check out the rest of my pics on my FACEBOOK page!

EARL, EARL, WHERE FORTH ART THOU?

Today marks the "big arrival" of Hurricane Earl, the highly touted storm scheduled to hit our shores today. As of now (10:30am), I don't really see any signs of any storm, let alone remnants of a hurricane. I understand, however, the south shore of Long Island is feeling the effects of him as we speak. This hasn't stopped folks from scurrying about in panic mode, gathering provisions as if Armageddon is about to descend upon us. Relax folks. Methinks we'll get some rain, maybe a bit of wind and that will be all she wrote. Then you'll be sitting on enough gallons of water to fill a swimming pool for nothing. F*** Earl.

Last night was a busy night of sports, the first of many as we head into the busy Fall sports season. Between the NY Mets, the multitude of college and NFL football games and a small political fund-raiser, the bar had a nice buzz to it.

I would be remiss not to mention the certain fanatical L.A. Laker fan who once again, could not keep down his cookies, choosing instead to share his dinner and drink intake with the bar..... literally.

Now everyone's gotten sick at a bar at least once in their lives. It goes with the territory. So you get a free pass. Do it twice in the same bar, you MIGHT get a free pass, with the proverbial stink eye that comes along with it. But when it becomes a common occurrence, and your latest escapade involves you doing it ON THE BAR... well, you no longer get the free pass. If this was Foursquare, you'd get the "Blowing Chunks" badge (see photo). Wear it proudly, son. I'm sure Kobe would be proud.

FLYING DOG DOGTOBERFEST on tap! With the Fall season kicking off and the Oktoberfest beers hitting the market, we've decided to go with a newbie (for us): FLYING DOG DOGTOBERFEST! Based out of Maryland, FLYING DOG is world renowned for its nice array of dog-centric brews in their repertoire, with witty names such as Doggie Style, Ragin' Bitch, In-Heat Wheat, Old-Scratch Amber, Road-Dog Porter, Tire-Bite Golden Ale, and Snake-Dog IPA, just to name a few.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

It's Labor Day Weekend, so here's how we roll for the holiday weekend:

FRIDAY (Regular hours): $4 Domestic Drafts/Mixed Well Drinks (12-9pm)

SATURDAY: (Regular hours): "Kick the Keg Saturday" (12-7pm), $2 mugs, All Beers On Tap (except premium brands). "Week in Review" (7-midnight), a week's worth of drink specials in one night!

AND FINALLY: Happy Birthday Wishes go out to MATT LONG (who's having a pretty busy week)! Happy birthday big guy! If you haven't checked out excerpts from his forthcoming book, check out yesterday's post for the link. It's a pretty good read!

That's it. Enjoy the Weekend!

THE LONG RUN....

If you haven't heard yet, FDNY member and co-owner of Third and Long's MATT LONG is releasing a book detailing his long journey back from the horrific bus accident that nearly took his life in December 2005.

Read in detail the struggles he endured and the obstacles he overcame as he worked his way from his hospital bed back to the streets of NYC and the running of the NY Marathon, and ultimately, the Lake Placid Ironman.

A truly inspiring piece, you can read an excerpt of the book at The Runner's World's website. If you're interested in purchasing an advance copy of the book, click on the book cover (see right).

A truly inspiring piece.

WHO'S EARL?

Earl, my friends is the much-hyped hurricane that is apparently heading our way this weekend. Will it ruin the Labor Day Weekend? I don't think so, though I hope that it helps to break this dammed heatwave we're experiencing (yet again). We're expected to feel his effects sometime on Thursday or Friday. Stay tuned.

College football kicks officially kicks off tomorrow with a slate of games including OHIO STATE vs MARSHALL and PITT vs UTAH, just to name a few. Believe it or not, we're already getting calls for the games so it should be a good night for some football!

Last night's edition of DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS was the final one of the summer and the turnout for the night was pretty good, as expected.

Sayonara, Summer 2010!

TONIGHT: With no Pub Trivia on tap this week, we devote tonight to the FEMALE FANS of Third and Long! LADIES NIGHT features $4 Mixed Well Drinks (just for the ladies), $5 Kopparberg Cider AND Sangria (5pm-close)!

Catch blanket coverage of the U.S. OPEN all day long!

*PLEASE NOTE: Be on the lookout for the October '10 issue of RUNNERS WORLD magazine! There's an interview with MATT LONG, talking about his soon-to-be-released tell-all book!
