The Brits are coming! The Brits are coming!

I just read that there is an art exhibit opening up in Central Park during the month of February. Apparently a world-renowned artist by the name of Christo will be setting up some type of exhibit throughout the Park, incorporating "gates" of some kind. This is supposed to be a pretty big deal as the word is that a lot of people from all over the world will be coming to NYC to check it out. That being said, it should be good business for the bars and restaurants in the city, right? HAH!!!!

While the restaurants/bars themselves should do okay with the infusion of cash, if history stays true to form, the ones who will lose out on this "venture" will be the service people (waiters, bartenders, etc.) Why? b/c for some reason, the our friendly visitors from the eastern shores of the Atlantic still haven't mastered the art of tipping! Here's an example: Last week, we were visited by members of the Royal Navy Boxing Team (of England)....nice blokes, very jovial. They visited our bar practically every night of the week, had round after round of drinks (each round consisted of no less than six drinks)...and each time: NO TIP. Now if you were the "lucky" person making the drinks for these lads, imagine the frustration that came from that (especially if you receive no shift pay and making your living solely on tips)...

Now I understand that the custom in a lot of the European countries is to not leave a gratuity (apparently it's included in the price); however, in the US of A, tipping is king! It's always been said that when you visit another country, you adapt to the ways of that country. That being said, turnabout is fair play, eh?

So I hope that the travel agencies that are booking the trips to NYC to see Christo and his "Gates" include a guide for tipping service! And if you happen to come across a lovely Brit or German visiting NYC for the exhibit, don't hesitate to "remind" them to tip!

NUFF SAID.....
