MY, YOUR BLOG IS PATHETIC....
At least according to Technorati, a leading internet blog tracker.
I happened to stumble across this week's NEW YORK Magazine (February 20, 2006) at EXCEL NEWS, my local newsstand. The cover story talked about the blog revolution ("The Blog Establishment", pg.26). Of course, as a blog writer, it caught my attention. As I read about the various success stories within the blog industry (GAWKER, BOING BOING, POSTSECRET, THE SUPERFICIAL, etc.), I couldn't help but to wonder where my little baby stood in comparison to the "big boys of the blog world".
So I go to Technorati to check out my status amongst the "big boys of the blog world"; And boy did I get a wake-up call: According to the blog tracker, my baby, THE DIARY OF THIRD AND LONG, came in at a whopping 430,306th! Talk about an ego smack! I was also amazed by how lucrative hosting a blog can be. Apparently some of the "big boys" are raking in five-to-six figures a year writing a blog (based on ad hits and such). How much have I made? Another ego crusher. According to Google AdSense, based on the number of ad hits on my blog- I am due about a whopping $8.06! And the kicker- They don't cut checks for anything under ten bucks! You can't make this stuff up.
So now that my ego is totally deflated, what happens now? Well, for starters, I won't stop writing anytime soon. I've come to enjoy the writing and the daily interactions with the small, yet very loyal readers. And I guess I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon. I guess the bigger question is: "How do I increase my readership without selling out?" At one end, I get a bit of a rush when I notice someone new to the blog; when someone out of the blue "discovers" my site for the first time and comments on it. At the other end, I also like the intimacy that comes with the smallness of the site. The fact is, I feel like I have a connection with most of the readers in some way. What is the happy medium? I'm still trying to feel that out. I do know, however, that I would feel weird emailing folks and asking them to link me up to their blog (now if they want to do it on their own, that's another story).
In the meantime, I guess I'll keep plugging away at the keyboard and doing what I do, and hopefully you'll continue to enjoy my spiel and keep coming back.
See you tonite!

You were right - the ladies of the American curling team are hot.
Can you do me a solid...Although the sidewalk is clear in front of the bar and the building next to you on 35th, the next 3 buildings down to the tunnel exit are still a mess.
I live next to the church and it's a real pain for me to walk up 35th between the tunnel exit and the bar.
I'll give you the $8.06...
