Follow the daily interactions of an affable bar manager of pretty cool and not-so-typical watering hole in NYC, in a not-so-typical neighborhood, Murray Hill. There may be some blurbs overheard at the bar, stimulating observations and random thoughts on random things. So be careful, you never know what might end up here....Enjoy and welcome to my world!

First Background Checks, now this?
If you've been keeping track of the bar/club scene of late, you know that there's been a lot of scrutiny on the safety and well-being of patrons. With the murder of an underaged girl, the City of New York is all of a sudden taking an aggressive stance on bars and clubs. First, the city government passed a law requiring all bouncers to be licenced and pass background checks. I personally don't have a problem with that because you want to be confident that the security staff you have working for you is legit and knows what they're doing. Last thing you need is a closet psycho working your door.
But to ban "BOTTLE SERVICE" from clubs? As if this is the cause of people getting hurt and/or into trouble? For as long as I can remember, bars and clubs always had to encounter problems with drunken patrons, long before "bottle service" was in vogue. We don't even offer "bottle service" at 3&L (imagine "bottle service" in our "Champagne Room...as if), yet I feel the need to speak up. It's as if this one incident has pushed politicians to "one-up" each other to propose various legislation to police the night life and get their names out in the forefront. Let's be a bit more sensible here. Monitoring staff and patrons, sure. Installing ID checkers or video cameras, ok. But banning "bottle service"? Now you're getting ridiculous. Next thing you know, it will be Prohibition all over again. WTF?

There, I've said my piece. Let me know what you think and in the meantime, have a fun AND safe weekend!

Bottle service generally prevents the bar staff from accurately tracking the amount of alcohol that a customer will intake during their stay. And since it is illegal to serve a visibly intoxicated individual, the bar may be serving somebody who is soused without even knowing it and possibly be liable for his/her actions both in and out of the bar.
I can understand that point of view, but if you have a well trained security staff, then you can look out for those types of problems and nip them in the bud before it gets out of hand...
the girl in that picture has some huge hands! I think it may be A MAN!
This blog is going west side on me!!!!
what ever happened to the concept of personal responsibility. why does every issue have to be overly legislated and regulated? Crime is a factor in every area of society and withing every industry. Why attack the nightlife industry? Have we ever tried to legislate the closing of post offices after all the "going postal" incidents? It is the responsibility of the patron and the patron's friends to watch each other and drink responsibly. It is the club's responsibility to provide a safe atmosphere with a competent and well-trained staff. If they choose to do bottle service, let their insurance premiums reflect the increased risk factor involved. The increased legislation of the nightlife business will only help drive another revenue source from the city and put more people out of work. The nightlife/service industry is one of the most important backbones to the NYC economy and is one of the major factors in attracting tourism. Let these politicians blow smoke about issues that have more relevance and can help more people.
