MURRAY HILL: THE NEW CHELSEA?

As an individual who's been a part of the neighborhood we call Murray Hill for over ten years, I've see it go through its share of changes. The neighborhood has gone from a quiet, sedate neighborhood dominated by seniors, to a much younger, hip clientele. This change was bound to happen because the senior population was slowly (for lack of a better term) dying off and with real estate being what it is in NYC, all of the valuable properties were being snapped up and transformed into the fresh look that we know today.

That being said, New York City is a city that constantly reinvents itself and with that in mind, Murray Hill seems to be following that rule as well. This time, the changes in the neighborhood seems to be one of more diversity and alternative lifestyles. Over the past few months I've noticed more and more same-sex couples popping up all over the neighborhood, which have led some people to call Murray Hill (affectionately enough) the "New Chelsea", or "Chelsea East". Whether that's true remains to be seen, however, if you had to base it on what i've seen, then perhaps there's something to it. Why is that the case? Who knows. Perhaps the real estate prices and the low crime is an attraction. Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see how the Frat Boys and the Chelsea Boys co-exist in the future, especially on a drunken weekend.

Just an observation.

Last night was a rather pleasant night for DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS. The weather cooperated with us again and gave us very comfortable temperatures, perfect for open windows and nice breezes. Interestingly enough, the bar started out like a sausage-fest, which went against the norm for a Tuesday night (it's usually the other way around, where the evening starts out predominately female and changes over during the evening). However, by 8pm, the ladies started to show up in droves and more than evened out the ratio. There were also a couple of small groups of interns saying good-bye to each other and taking copious amounts of photos.

At one point during the evening, this rather large, tall black woman comes in the bar. When I say "big" and "tall", picture the black chick "LaFawnda" from the film NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, she was that big. So she's in the bar, at first hanging out with the crew of misfits I like to call the CRACK PACK, a group of semi-regulars that show up late night and live on Jack and Cokes. Then as the night went on, she branched off on her own and began to flirt with different men in the bar. My spider senses told me that she was probably a stripper of some type. That was confirmed minutes later when "Every Rose Has a Thorn" began to play in the background and she began to do a very seductive pole-less dance in the middle of the floor, with everyone stopping to stare in disbelief. While she kept her clothes on, it was only a matter of time before her clothing became optional. Bizarre indeed.

A funny night indeed.

LADIES NIGHT is back tonight, with $4.00 Coronas, Amstel Light, Blue Moon Ale and Coors Light OR $5.00 Cosmos, Appletinis and Margaritas. Hell, if you are feeling adventurous, do both! We have a special guest bartender making her return appearance tonight, BABY GIRL! So please stop by to say hi and to support her tonight. I promise you she's a great bartender and nice on the eyes, too!

More updates to come!
