HAIL TO THE RUNNERS!

Yesterday was Marathon Sunday and as always, we hosted our Annual Marathon Party, as a tribute to the many participants of the N.Y. Marathon and their friends and families. The day started out as normal, as the Sunday Brew Crew gathered for their normal ritual of games and hi-jinx. Notably absent from the usual cast of characters was jolly old MR. CHIPS, the NY Giants #1 fan. The fellow members of the Crew were genuinely concerned about his absence as he's usually one of the first members to arrive. Some of the members thought he may have not made it home from last Sunday, as he left the bar feeling no pain. As it turns out, he decided to stay home as he didn't want to deal with the massive traffic headaches associated with the Marathon.

One funny incident from the afternoon: A group of workers from one of our local "utility" companies took a break from their outdoor street project to come inside and enjoy a couple of cold ones and catch some football during their "lunch break". AFRIKA BAMBATTA, who loves to take pictures with my camera (too bad he can't take pics worth a damn), decided to mess with these guys. He started out by taking pics of the Brew Crew, then suddenly.... he whipped around and took a picture of the "Utility workers". As soon as he did that, the workers dropped their beers and scattered like roaches in a kitchen when the lights come on. After laughing for a few minutes, AFRIKA apologized and told them he was kidding around. I guess the guys didn't want to see their pictures in the Daily News. Funny stuff.

The Marathon Party began at around 5:30pm and it started out slowly; As the runners began to trickle into the bar with their friends and families, the bar patrons gave them a round of applause. After the DJ arrived and began to play music, the bar all of a sudden was packed with runners and supporters. One of the highlights of the party was the appearance of our own MATT LONG. He'd been up since 5am, at the Marathon starting point, supporting and encouraging the FDNY runners. He looked great and everyone was very happy to see him at the bar. There were a few people who hadn't seen him since the accident and some of them were emotional as they remembered what he went through at that time, and to see him now; one person said it simply: "It's nothing short of a miracle".

The bar stayed busy for most of the night as the Marathon participants danced and drank all night long. To say the party was a success is an understatement. It was a great time.

Stop by this week to meet our new day bartender, Terry! Welcome him to the Third and Long Family!
