I know it's only Sunday, but a lot has happened over the last couple of days and I wanted to update the masses.
Friday night wasn't that packed with worthy activities to report, but I did want to share with you something I hadn't seen since the '80's: THE MEMBERS ONLY jacket. You know what I'm talking about. The fashion staple that all cool suburban, mullet wearing types were wearing back in the era of A-ha, Duran Duran and John Hughes movies. Well, imagine my surprise when AMERICAN PSYCHO came strolling in with that very same jacket on Friday night. Talk about nostalgia overload....
SATURDAY
The day started extremely early (for me anyways), as I met up with MR. LOW-KEY. I had a couple of V.I.P. passes for the NY JETS Draft Party at Dave and Buster's in Times Square. Now as everyone knows, I am a Cleveland Browns fan, so going to this party to cheer on the Jets wasn't my thing. I was doing this more for MR. LOW-KEY; There's been countless times where he's gone out of his way to prepare meals for the staff (he's an avid cook); he's also a great and loyal patron of the bar and a HUGE Jets fan, so this was my way of saying thanks for his support over the years.
Now I've been to a few of these "Draft Parties" and they are pretty much one and the same. You hang out with a bunch of die-hard football fans and watch the NFL Draft and cheer and boo your teams picks. An interesting experience.
When we arrived at Dave and Buster's, the place was filled with Jets fans. Of course, MR. LOW-KEY was ready to head to the bar, but I held back a second, scanning the room for where we were supposed to hang out. I asked the hostess where the V.I.P. section was, and at first she gave me a puzzled look. Then when she saw my silver bullet bracelet (provided by sponsor Coors Light), she immediately apologized and took MR. LOW-KEY and to ia separate room in the back of the restaurant. We stroll in and there are tables and a very large flat-screened TV. There were also quite a few very large men and some corporate types. Turns out we were going to be spending the afternoon with various players from the NY JETS and their staff. There was a nice spread of food, and the best part of it all, O-P-E-N Bar. We looked at each other and gave a "hi-five", took our places at a table and settled in for a long afternoon of Coors Lights, Bloody Marys and finger foods.
Autographs from the Jets players....A fun afternoon indeed.
After the Draft Party, I headed back to the bar where I was scheduled to meet with a lot of people for an impromptu send-off party for HIS BOY ELROY, who's relinquishing his role as co-manager at THIRD and LONG, to take on the general manager role at our sister establishment, M.J. ARMSTRONG'S. A lot of friends and patrons came by throughout the evening to share their happiness for H.B.E. and wish him the best in his new venture. He won't disappear entirely from our midst, however, as he will still toil behind the stick on Tuesday nights. I'm sure he will be very successful at M.J.'s, though I will miss working with him on a daily basis here at 3 & L.
BLONDE CHATTERBOX and her flock
Though I had to bail early, I could hear the well wishers partying well into the night. It was a successful sendoff to a great guy!
