THE LATEST EDITION OF "RANDOM OBSERVATIONS".....

It's been awhile since I shared some random observations, so I guess now is as good a time as any....

*Some of my best conversations have been with overseas tourists. They often bring a unique perspective on things that you don't always think about. For example, I met a lovely couple a few nights ago, from Dublin, Ireland. I actually met them twice- the first time was Friday night; the bar was busy and they were in and out most of the night, smoking cigarettes and having a good time. We didn't really talk much, just some idle chit-chat here and there. When I asked how long they were in town for, they mentioned that they were flying back to Ireland the next day. So I wished them the best and left it at that.

The next day, I was working the day shift (a lot of shifts for the old guy this past week, btw) and this couple came in and ordered a couple mugs of Magner's. They looked a bit familiar, but I didn't think anything of it at first. After they had their drink and began to talk, I realized it was the same couple from the night before. Turns out that their flight wasn't until later in the evening and they'd been booted from their hotel. So what better way to pass the time away than to go back to the "scene of the crime" from the night before? So they ended up back at Third and Long.

The next few hours went quickly as we talked about all kinds of things; they shared with me details of their awesome vacation, which included a stint in Australia. They also talked about life in Ireland compared to what we have going on here. It was pretty enlightening, to say the least. They were very easily some of the most down-to-earth people I'd met in quite a long time. They also gave me food for thought regarding life and how you live it. And anytime you come across someone that can hold a conversation about other things besides sports and sex, you embrace it (not saying that there's anything wrong with sports and/or sex). Good stuff.

*What is it about the rich that makes you scratch your head? We get our share of well-to-do patrons that live in the neighborhood. Most of them are trust fund babies who live off the parental dole, not worrying about the rent and flashing the plastic card with the valuable metallic strip on the back. That being said, if you are so posh and have not a financial care in the world, why on earth do you still find the need to haggle over every drink special we have?

Now anyone who lives in New York City can very well say that our drink specials on a whole, rank right up there with the best of them. In a city where the average drink can run you anywhere from $7-14 bucks a pop, a one-dollar mug of Bud Light will not put a dent in your changepurse. Trust me. So why insist on getting a buyback on a dollar mug of beer? Hello? It's one measly buck! Some things I'll never figure out.

*Now that the SOPRANOS is finally out of our lives for good, the next "Must-See-TV" event returns next month. What am I talking about? It's the phenomenal comedy on Showtime called WEEDS. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, it's a quirky comedy about a single mother, living in an affluent housing development with her two children. To make ends meet after the untimely death of her husband, she resorts to selling weed. Tons of it. There's plenty of funny storylines and quirky characters that keep you coming back for more each week. It's an easy show to watch (only 30 minutes per episode) and quite franky, it's awesome. I can't put it any better than that. If you have Showtime on Demand, you can catch the first two seasons now (I got through both seasons in one day).

Speaking of Showtime, I have to say that it's slowly but surely reaching HBO's status of quality TV, with a host of shows that are well done and very entertaining. I'm just sayin'....

*I read a lot of blogs. Most of them are okay, but every once in awhile, I come across one or two that make me laugh out loud. One blog in particular is WHAT SUCKS. A blog written by a pretty funny comedy writer (and a former RA of mine, back in my Academia days), WHAT SUCKS is worth a read. Check it out HERE

*Congrats to THE ENERGIZER BUNNY on her new gig! I know she's been looking to get a new job for quite awhile and it sounds like she's found the job of her dreams. Good for you. I also have to say that the more I get to know her, the cooler she gets. One of the perks of being in the bar business is coming across cool people and she falls under that category.

*We've begun carrying PBR cans and I have to say I'm pretty surprised at how popular they are. First of all, I can't remember the last time I drank a beer out of a can, let alone, PBR. I tried one out the other night and it was pretty damn good.

Have you ever had something to eat or drink and it immediately brought back memories of something specific in your lifetime? When I had that can of PBR, it reminded me of my first beer in high school. It was one of those "illegal beers" that you had with friends after school on a Friday night, before the big football game. I don't know why I had such a vivid memory of it, but as I enjoyed that can of PBR, I couldn't help but to smile as I thought of that brisk fall night in the parking lot of the high school, trying to drink that beer and look cool at the same time... without getting caught by the security guard. Cool shit.

Speaking of PBR's, we're featuring PBR's tonight as part of GIRLS NIGHT OUT. The rules change a bit for the summer months, as we now offer $3.00 Mixed Well Drinks (still for the ladies only), and $2.50 PBR cans, or 5 for $10.00 (for everyone). All the fun begins at 5pm and goes ALL NIGHT LONG!
