WEEKEND HAPPENINGS

I'm sitting at the bar as we speak and as I write this, I find myself in a sea of blue as the bar is teeming with firemen coming back from a funeral of one of their fallen brethren. As I take in the moment, listening to the guys share stories of the past, It's interesting to note the number of women who are piqued by their curiosity of a bar filled with men in uniform. I've written about this before, the fascination of women and the guys in uniform, whether it be Army, Navy, Marines, FDNY, NYPD, etc. Women are always drawn to the uniform, like a moth to a flame. It never ceases to amaze me. If you are an avid people watcher like I am, you would enjoy this display immensely.

Last night was one of those typical summer Thursday nights, where the early part of the evening started out slowly, but as the sun went down, the pace picked up. One of my former barbacks, THE NYU X-COUNTRY KID stopped by to say hi. He had with him in tow, a cute blond from Texas (he claims they're "only friends"..... hmmm), who's a classmate of his. Turns out she's a Dallas Stars fan, having baby-sat for one of their players in the past (I knew there was something I liked about her). It was great to see him hanging out and relaxed for a change; when he worked for me, he was always running around like a scared rabbit. Then again, he does run cross-country.

There were a few groups of firemen from various parts of the country, in town for the funerals; and as is always the case when firemen from out of town come into NYC, many of them stop by Third and Long. Last night I came across a few from California, Oklahoma, and Detroit, among other places. Many of them had their wives or girlfriends in tow. Always pleasant and friendly, they really seem to enjoy making the trek to the Big Apple, even if its under somber circumstances.

By 10pm, the bar was on full-blast mode, with everyone in good spirits and having a good time. I, on the other hand, got a visit from Montezuma and felt the effects of her revenge, having to run back and forth to the "Executive Wash Room" on more than one occasion throughout the night. Luckily, we were in good hands behind the bar as BLONDE CHATTERBOX and and BABY GIRL held things together. Also got a visit from REDSKINS GIRL, who'd been M.I.A. for awhile, as well as her sidekicks, FREEJACK (even more M.I.A.) and GINA (a.k.a. THE PROFESSIONAL GRAD STUDENT); as always, nice to see them; the summer season has treated them well. AMERICAN PSYCHO also made a quick drive-by, as did JOHN CUSACK and his perpetual man-date, STIFFLER. All told, a pretty good night.

WEEKEND HAPPENINGS:

TONIGHT: WEEKEND JUMP-OFF HAPPY HOUR (4pm-8pm): $4.00, ALL BEERS, HOUSE WINES and MIXED WELL DRINKS! (Start the weekend out right!)
