Ladies, Gents and most importantly, Met fans:
Please understand that my rant on your team the last few days has nothing to do with whether or not I like the team. Quite frankly, it makes for good business if they indeed make the playoffs.
The fact of the matter is that I don't think I can quite remember when I've ever seen a team with such talent and payroll collapse as quickly as the Mets have done, especially after they dominated the National League for most of the season. If they somehow complete the meltdown and end up missing the playoffs, then quite frankly, they deserve all the abuse that they will get, from me, the New York sports media, and most importantly, from their fans. The fact that they find themselves in this position in the first place is inexcusable, if you really want my opinion.
At this time of the year, all talk should be about the playoffs, who they will play first and World Series speculation. Instead we find ourselves wondering in bewilderment, whether or not this team will make the playoffs, period. WTF?
And to add salt to an open wound, there's the meteoric rise of the cross-town rivals, the NY Yankees. They were 14 games back at one point and now they find themselves 1.5 games out of first place (at the time of this writing). They now find themselves on the cusp of catching the first place Red Sox and have a very real chance of winning the division. Imagine if that happened at the same time the Mets lost? Talk about ugly. That will simply knock the Amazin's back to step-child status in NY City sports. That, for many of you Met fans, will be too much to bear and I predict folks will be jumping out of windows.
Simply pathetic. There, I said it. If there was ever a time for the hometown Mets to grow a set and man up, now would be it.
NUFF said.
