Every once in awhile you come across someone who's simply bad news. Everything about this person oozes "shady", if you know what I mean. As soon as he speaks, you gotta start ducking because every word out of his mouth is some type of lie or scam, waiting to club you over the head like a ton of bricks. He rarely surfaces, but when he does, he's a royal pain in the ass, like that itch you get in the small of your back, just out of reach of your hands.
In this case, the person in question used to be a friend of the bar back in the early days of Third and Long. He was good friends with a few of our former bartenders and would come around pretty frequently. He had the gift of gab and could tell a good story with the best of them. Then something happened along the way: The bartenders moved on to bigger and better things in their lives, while this guy fell by the wayside and into the seedy world of drug life. He disappeared for a few years and suddenly resurfaced one day, a shell of his former self.
This time, whenever he would come around, he'd tell a sob story to curry favor and illicit some cash, only to go and feed his habit. He got me a couple of times before I became wise to his game. The same thing happened to a few other bar staff before everyone got wise to him. Then once he realized that the well had run dry, he'd simply disappear. Every other year or so, he'd magically re-appear and try to run his same scams again. All in all, a pain in the ass.
The difference this time around is that the staff is totally different from the last go-round, so most of them aren't aware of him and his scams. When he showed up out of the blue last Friday, dropping names and pan-handling for cash, I couldn't help but to roll my eyes and say to myself, "Here we go again....". So now I find myself having to give everyone the heads up about this guy and what he does. Like I said before, a royal pain in the ass.
Part of me can't help but to feel for the guy, but damn..... get your shit together, bruh.
