LSU AND (BETTER YET, THE SEC) BEATS OHIO STATE FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!Last night, a packed bar watched in amazement as LSU proved to everyone why they deserved to be in the National Championship by overcoming early game jitters and putting on a clinic on THE Ohio State University, beating them 38-24 to bring the title back to the SEC. That makes it two years in a row now that the Buckeyes reached the National Championship game, only to be humbled by the speed of the SEC.
Once again the Buckeyes jumped out to a quick lead, just like they did in last year's game. And once again, the SEC opponent found a way to adjust and overcome the fast start to run away with the game, just like last year. And as much credit as OSU coach Jim Tressel gets for building a national powerhouse in Columbus, he can't seem to find a way to get over that hurdle which is the speed teams of the SEC. I don't know if it's his lack of skills when it comes to adjusting to a superior opponent, or if it's the quality of players he recruits, while he does enough to beat Michigan every year, it's going to take a little bit more than that to bring the National Championship back to the "Horseshoe".
On the other hand, hats off to Les Miles and his Tigers of LSU. They got a lot of flack for being a two-loss team appearing in a National Championship game. And when they fell behind early, they looked to have proved the nay-sayers right. However, after the smoke cleared, they proved to everyone in America that they clearly were the best team in the land. My hats off to them. And to HORNY GOATWEED- sorry dude. Money well spent I hope....
Now that College Football is officially over, we can concentrate on the NFL PLAYOFFS and the NHL and College Basketball (note that I didn't include the NBA- they are a non-entity in my eyes until the playoffs)!
"THE WIRE" IS BACK, BETTER THAN EVER!The critically-acclaimed HBO series is back for its fifth and final season and from what I've see thus far, it's a keeper! I was a late subscriber to "THE WIRE", initially resisting it for god knows what reason, but when GOLDIE, AFRIKA BAMBATTA and T-BILL kept hounding me to check it out for years, I finally did (with the assistance of DVD's from the first few seasons), and let me tell you- I was immediately hooked. It's gritty, dark, funny and sad at times, brilliantly written and acted with an excellent cast; It paints a grim, yet believable picture of urban life rarely matched by any other show, past or present. And now with its final season starting up, I encourage all of you to check it out. HBO also has Season 4 available for viewing "On-Demand", though I encourage you to rent seasons 1-3 to really get the full flavor of this riveting series. I know I've raved about other cable based series in the past (BROTHERHOOD, THE SOPRANOS, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, just to name a few), but if you don't watch anything else this season, please do yourself a favor and give "THE WIRE" a shot. Trust me, with the Writer's Strike going on and all of the networks spoon-feeding you reruns and reality TV crap, you'll thank me in the long run.
