FUNKY FEBRUARY..... GRRRR.

Now that the glow of SUPER BOWL XLII is starting to wear off, it's starting to hit me that football season is officially over, and that we are in the midst of what I like to call "FUNKY FEBRUARY". This is the time of year where you go through NFL withdrawal, while waiting for "March Madness" to begin.

FUNKY FEBRUARY can be a difficult transition for some folks (myself included), especially if the winter blahs have kicked in. Luckily for us here in the NYC area, we've been blessed with practically no snowfall at all, so at the very least, you can still get out and do some things. In years past, when FUNKY FEBRUARY kicked in, there would be tons of snow outside, thus making you want to do nothing but hibernate on the couch with remote in hand and Domino's pizza on the coffee table.

Now there are a lot of sports going on during FUNKY FEBRUARY; for example:

NBA BASKETBALL: The National Basketball Association is about halfway through their season and their All-Star Weekend takes place next weekend. But to be honest with you, no one really cares about the NBA. And those that do, only care about the playoffs, which begins around May.

NHL HOCKEY: The "beautiful sport" for diehards just completed their All-Star Weekend and have past their halfway point of the season. Out of the "Big Four" (Baseball, Basketball, Football are the other three) major sports played in this country, this one trails the other three due to an inept Commisioner who doesn't know a thing about marketing its sport. Pretty sad. Does poesess a fiercely loyal following.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Probably the most popular sport after the football season ends, the college teams are drawing close to the end of the regular season; then the fun begins. Conference tournaments leads into the big one: MARCH MADNESS. Looking forward to that.

NASCAR: The new season kicks in this weekend with the BUD SHOOTOUT and the DAYTONA 500 (next weekend). Another sport with a huge, loyal following, though it's a spotty proposition here in NYC. We have our fair share of fans in the Murray Hill area and just like hockey, they are diehards as well.

EUROPEAN SOCCER: While we do get our fair share of "fringe" fans, the true diehard "football" fan will only be found in pubs in which like-minded individuals hang out.

So while there's a lot of offerings available for the casual sports fan, nothing will take the place of the NFL. That's just the way it is. So if you are like me, you handle your football withdrawals in stride and think back on the great season that just completed. Then you look forward to next fall. *sigh*

TONIGHT: It's "Lite Nite Thursdays" with all LIGHT BEERS (bottles AND drafts) only $4.00! (4pm-10pm). There's plenty of sports on tap tonight with the NHL, NBA and College Basketball taking priority on the TV's. We also have a guest bartender on tap tonight; her name is ALISHA and I think you'll like her. She's a pretty cool chick with a great personality. Stop by and show her some love!
