LET THE GAMES BEGIN!


In a couple of hours, the BIG EAST TOURNAMENT begins, and with that, so does MARCH MADNESS, as we know it. The quest to be the best college team in the nation kicks into high gear for most of the major conferences today. Folks have flown in from all over the Northeast to partake in one of the most exciting college tournaments in the country. I anticipate a lot of exciting basketball over the next few days with possibly an upset or two to make things interesting.

One thing I surely look forward to is the arrival of "The Buffalo Crew". This motley crew of "fortysomethings" fly down from Buffalo every year to catch the Big East Tournament. They love hanging out at Third and Long so much that more often than not, they spend more time at the bar than at the games itself. There's been many a time where you'd find these guys hanging at the bar, and then realizing halfway through a game that they should have been at the game. More often than not, you'll find their unused tickets sitting at the bar as they stagger out and into the brisk March night. A fun, rowdy bunch, they party hard and mean no harm. A real good group of guys.

Then you'll find the boosters of the various college teams; Dressed in the colors of the schools they support, many of them are first time visitors to The Big Apple, and they are usually awestruck by the whole New York experience. More often than not, they come back to the bar in-between games because they like the place, or they are afraid to stray too far away from their hotels.

There are usually a lot of hook-ups taking place during the Big East Tournament; Some of the locals are usually making time with an out-of-towner who's excited to be with an actual "New Yorker", though I really don't get what the big deal is.

All told, this is usually a fun week for both patrons and staff alike. More importantly, this week leads up to St. Patrick's Day weekend, which should lead to more shenanigans and fun for everyone involved.

Let's get this party started already!
