WEEKEND WRAP
Friday night was highlighted by the crazy sports action that took place; The Pittsburgh Penguins did the unthinkable, pulling out a thrilling 2-1 victory over the heavily-favored Detroit Red Wings (on the road mind you), to win the Stanley Cup.
What was impressive was the number of folks who showed up for the game, especially in light of the fact that it was a summer Friday night, on the same weekend as the Subway Series (Yankees/Mets).
Speaking of the Subway Series, right after the end of the Stanley Cup game, all eyes turned to the end of the Mets/Yankees game. By then, it looked as if the Mets were going to put away their crosstown rivals. Two outs, bottom of the ninth inning, two men on base. Alex Rodriguez hits a routine pop-up that should have been the last out of the game. However, the unthinkable happens when Met infielder Luis Castillo saunters out into the outfield to make the play.... and drops the sure out! The baserunners scramble home and the Yankees pull out an improbable victory, much to the shock/delight of all of the patrons in the bar! The play, bizarre at best, was replayed over and over again and each time they showed the poor guy dropping the ball, the reaction in the bar was the same. Crazy stuff.
Saturday afternoon was a lazy one; I spent most of it at the bar, checking up on things and getting ready for a private event that was scheduled for the bar in the early evening. Hung out with MR. LOW-KEY, SILENT BOB, DIRTY SANCHEZ and T-BILL as we discussed the news of the day and watched life stroll by. I sometimes forget how easy it is to get drawn into the relaxing lull of the weekend when you're sitting by an open window and watching the people walking by. The event, a surprise birthday party for the wife of one of our original bartenders, went off without a hitch. She was genuinely surprised and everyone had a great time!
Speaking of MR. LOW-KEY, Happy birthday, big guy!
Today I have a few options at my disposal; Since the bar is closed today, I could head downtown and try to brave the long lines at the Madison Avenue BBQ Festival. Or I could FINALLY catch the Hangover, the hit movie that everyone is raving about. Or I could simply chill out and catch some NASCAR. Hmmm.....
