THE LAST SUMMER FLING...

Labor Day weekend has arrived and the last weekend of the summer looks like it's going to be a beautiful one. Not sure what that means for the bar; while many of you will no doubt escape for that last fling of freedom before settling in for the fall/winter season, others will be stranded in the city, whether it be due to finances, college, or lack of a destination. I, personally, look upon this weekend with mixed views. On one hand, it's practically time for BREW CREW SUNDAYS, the best time of the year at the bar; On the other hand, it's my last free Sunday for AT LEAST five months or more. It's a mixed blessing.

In any case, the bar will be open this Friday/Saturday for the holiday break, with college football dominating the schedule; We'll close on Sunday and re-open Monday afternoon at 4pm for MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, featuring FLORIDA STATE vs MIAMI (not a bad way to start out the fall season)!

Sorry for the short post, but there are things that need tending to and until I take care of that, I can't flow like I want to. So if you're around, stop by for HAPPY HOUR (5-9pm). If not, enjoy the holiday break and make it a safe one!

I'm out.

FANTASY FOOTBALL MADNESS

With the holiday weekend quickly approaching and quite a few of our regulars on vacation this week, we postponed Pub Trivia for the week, which was just as well as we hosted a Fantasy Football Draft Party for a group of guys. With live drafts, you need the noise levels to be relatively low so that the participants can hear each other's draft selections. And with a regular trivia night, holding a live draft would have been impossible.

While that was going on, things were slow going at first. There were representatives of HEINEKEN LIGHT in to promote their product so they made the rounds, offering up samples and giving away swag such as t-shirts, key chains, beer coozies and such. As the night went on, things began to pick up to the point where we actually had a decent crowd. At least better than I thought we would have for a holiday week.

At one point during the night, BLONDE CHATTERBOX arrived; she was meeting up with her former roommate to catch up on things. Both ladies looked really nice and tanned (summer treated them well). It was also brought to my attention that I have to come up with new blog names for the increasing number of new folks that have become members of the Third and Long family. Great, another thing to add to my growing to-do list.

There was this small group of NYU dental students who came in from some function and within a few minutes, they were ordering shots of Patron and boozing it up pretty good. One person would order a round of shots; then someone else would order up another round. Each time they would pile their drinks on one person's tab.

When it came time to settle the bill, the young lady who opened the tab started bitching about her bill, wondering where all of the shots came from. The bartenders explained to her what took place and she started bitching and complaining. Her friend offered to pay for the shots and the girl still bitched and practically accused the bartender of padding the bill. The bartender took offense to that accusation and let her know his feelings on it (which impressed me, by the way). I was about to make my way over to intervene but it looked like he was handling the situation fine on his own. The girls eventually paid their tab and while they didn't leave much of a tip (surprise, surprise), at least they more or less accepted the fact that the bill was correct.

There were other small instances that made you want to say "Really??", but you get the gist of how the night went. It was one of those nights.

At least the Fantasy Football Draft crew were pretty cool and BLONDE CHATTERBOX kept us entertained by her antics. Bless her heart. It was one of those nights.

Headed to the U.S. Open today and then back at the bar for college football and "THIRSTY THURSDAYS".

Before I go, I want to wish THE IRON MAN, Matt Long a very happy birthday! You deserve it big guy!

VIVA LE FRENCHY!

Last night was the final edition of DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS for the summer and what better way to usher out the the summer season than to usher in the return of FRENCHY behind the stick after a long hiatus? So between the dollar mugs, the French Man's return and the appearance of our former bartender and diva, BLONDE CHATTERBOX, it made for a loud and busy night.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that summer is pretty much over. I also lament at the fact that I really don't have much to show for it. Story of my life I guess.

NO PUB TRIVIA TONIGHT as we take a brief respite for the Labor Day holiday. Pub Trivia will return next Wednesday with a new theme and more challenging questions. So get your team ready for some competitive fun!

FANTASY FOOTBALL DRAFT season is in full swing and we are the home of the Fantasy Football Draft! We have a unique drink special for all leagues holding their fantasy drafts here; Call (212).447.5711 for details and to reserve a draft time/spot.

College football kicks off tomorrow night with a double-header on ESPN: South Carolina vs N.C. State (7pm), followed by Oregon vs Boise State (and their "unique" blue field). Damn I love this time of year!

TONIGHT: $4 Mixed Well Drinks (for ladies) and Miller High Life buckets (5/$15), ALL NIGHT LONG!

As always, you can follow us on our Facebook page as well as on our website for up to date information and bar specials! We've also been getting quite a few inquiries about employment opportunities at Third and Long of late, so if you want to submit a resume, go to our website and contact us there. We'll contact you if there is an opening available.

That's all I got for now. If I get inspired to bring you more, you'll get it here.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.....

Last night I spent the bulk of my night off at Dave and Buster's on West 42nd Street, where I matched wits with fellow fantasy football scribes in an ESPN Radio FFL Draft. Apparently this was an "invite-only" affair where the radio station selected certain individuals to participate with cash prizes up for grabs and bragging rights to keep. The first thing I found odd about the whole thing was the fact that they (ESPN) were holding its draft at Dave and Buster's and not at the ESPN ZONE.

Other things I picked up on during the testosterone-filled evening; Last year I went to an ESPN Draft party where I expected to participate in a similar draft. As it turned out, there was no draft to be had; however, they did have free booze and swag so it made up for the frustration of dealing with a clusterfuck of a night.

This time, however, while they actually had us at tables and participating in a real live draft, there was no freebies to be found. You had to pay for your own drinks and grub. WTF? If you're going to tell me that I'm a VIP, then at the very least, treat me like one!

As the night went on, I realized quickly why I fell out of love with the live draft format. Unless you're in a league with good friends with fun personalities, the night itself becomes pure torture. Everyone is an expert (or so they think) and everyone has to be heard. If one person says "Tom Brady has such-in-such stats", the next person has to one-up him by pulling out some obscure stat out of his ass to impress everyone at the table. Friggin ridiculous (I had a pretty good draft, by the way).

So after almost three hours of numbing torture, we finally ended our draft and I was out of there like a bat out of hell. As I headed home, I stopped by the bar to pick up my keys and to get a glimpse of how the night was going. What in the hell did I walk into? Outside of the bar was a handful of young, loud and boisterous Brits, celebrating what I think was the end of their summer internship. They were whooping and hollering, dancing up a storm and making general asses of themselves.

Walking into the bar, I saw more of the same; lots of team chants, dancing and power drinking (or as powerful as a mug of beer can get). Crazy stuff. I didn't last too long there- aside from a brief but good conversation with a couple of tennis media guys from the Far East who always make it a point to stop by our bar every year when the U.S. Open is in town. They are great guys and always good to talk to, however, with the chaos of the bar overwhelming me, I had to get out of there. They will be here for the next two weeks so I'll get to see them again.

Speaking of the U.S. Open, I'm planning on another excursion there this week, and I am LOOKING forward to it! I got my first taste of it last year and I swore that I would make it a yearly outing. So barring any last minute snafus, I'll be there again this year!

DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS resumes tonight, the LAST ONE OF THE SUMMER! $1 Bud/Bud Light mugs, all night long!

More to come. Watch out for those Brits!
