New Brews in the House!

At Third and Long, we try to circulate the beer selection, depending on the time of year. With that being said, I would like to introduce you to some of the new beers joining the rotation of our stand by hits:

1) GOOSE ISLAND HARVEST ALE. Based out of Chicago, Illinois and brewed by the famous Goose Island Brewery, this particular brand is classified as an American Extra Special Bitter (ESB), with 5.7% ABV.

Brewed in honor of the Harvest season this copper colored ESB is made with Cascade hops and the richest Midwestern malts. A fruity American hop aroma and a toasty malt character make Goose Island Harvest Ale an extra special beer worthy of your devotion. ($6/pint).


2). SIERRA NEVADA CELEBRATION ALE. Based out of Chico, California, Sierra Nevada is world-renowned for its IPA; however, they are noted for their seasonal brands as well. The Celebration Ale (6.8% ABV) is one of their better selections, perfect for the Fall/Winter season.

Wonderfully robust and rich, Celebration^® Ale is dry-hopped for a lively, intense aroma. Brewed especially for the holidays, it is perfect for a festive gathering or for a quiet evening at home. ($6/12 oz. bottle* due 11/09).


3). LAGUNITAS "BROWN SHUGGA". This is an interesting brew with an interesting story. Legend has it that the brewmasters at Lagunitas Brewery were making a batch of its Gnarlywine when something went wrong during the process. Instead of simply dumping the batch, the brewmaster decided to experiment by adding brown sugar to the batch. The experiment worked and ''Brown Shugga" was born.

Don't let the sweet name fool you. This brew packs a wallop (9.8% ABV), and should probably be viewed as a sipping beer as opposed to a "suck-em-down" draft. There is a lot to enjoy during your sipping experience so take your time and be classy about it. You will encounter a lot of spices mixed in with the obvious brown sugar/caramel malt base. The booze factor will be evident but it should deter you from enjoying a unique brew. GO EASY with this one but enjoy! ($7/12 oz. bottle *due 11/09).


4) ALLAGASH WHITE. An American take on a Belgian Wheat Ale, Allagash White is brewed by the ALLAGASH BREWING COMPANY, out of Portland, Maine. It's a great year-round beer perfect for who are into brands such as Hoegaarden and (dare I say), Blue Moon.

ALLAGASH WHITE (5.2 %ABV) has been known to have a bit of a bite to it, but in a good way, with strong evidence of fruit (banana, grapes, orange and lemon peel), cloves and other spices. While you may experience a bit of a bite at the beginning, it has a surprisingly clean finish and it's easy to drink. ($6/12oz. bottle)

Those are just some of the newer brews to join the ever-expanding Third and Long beer list. Make sure to try one (or all of them) the next time you're in. You may find something you like!

TAKING A TIME OUT...

I am taking a time out from blogging for the next couple of days. Need to recharge the mental batteries. In the meantime, check out the bar website to see what's happening over the next few days. I should be back by Monday, hopefully refreshed and ready to bang out some good stuff. We'll see what the next few days brings us.

But before I sign off, I had to post this video of a pretty bizarre women's soccer match between the University of New Mexico and BYU. I didn't know women's soccer could get so... hardcore!

THE YANKEES WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!

After years of frustration and heartbreak, the NY Yankees finally, FINALLY won the elusive World Series championship in front of a capacity home crowd and in packed bars and restaurants all over the city.

Thanks to the timely hitting of World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, the determination of old warhorse Andy Pettite, and the stone cold focus of closer Mariano Rivera, the NY Yankees could do no wrong and as a result, the Philadelphia Phillies folded in the biggest poker game of their season.

From the start of the game, you could sense that good things were in store for the Pinstripes; the crowd at the bar seem to feel the confidence in the air and it rubbed off on them. Throughout the game, the Yankee chants grew louder and stronger and while the few Phillies fans in attendance were game, it soon became evident that this wouldn't be their night. And as the game marched towards the predicted end, they slowly began to slink out of the bar, not wanting to be a part of what would be a glorious celebration.




And sure enough, when the last out was recorded and the players ran out onto the field to celebrate, all hell broke loose in the bar...

The crowd really went nuts when the bar started playing Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind", the new unofficial NY Yankees theme song. The celebration eventually spilled out onto 3rd Avenue and the amped up fans really let l0ose from there....

BIG NIGHT IN THE BRONX

Sorry for the late post as I have been running around tying up loose ends. Last night was an off night for World Series action so it was your regular Dollar Draft Tuesday, filled with NYU med students blowing off steam, young professionals trying to go "Big Willie Style" by buying rounds of dollar mugs and putting them on their first credit cards and tourists in town for Game 6 of the Series.

Speaking of World Series, we had yet another "celeb sighting" (this seems to be the week of celeb sightings in our bar); This time around, it was Fox Pre-Game host, CHRIS ROSE, who hung out with members of his production crew. To his credit, he stepped up his game, choosing not to roll with the dollar drafts, but instead, rolling with the big boy drinks. They were pretty laid back and friendly and might I add, rather generous in the gratuity department.

There's a lot of buzz revolving tonight's game and understandably so. The Yankees can close out the Series with a win and if Philadelphia pulls out a victory, then it all comes down to one game. The stakes couldn't be higher and that, my friend, is great for business. First pitch: 7:57pm. Should be a doozy of a game!

TONIGHT: $4 Brooklyn Pennant Ale drafts, $4 Mixed Well Drinks (for ladies) and $15 Miller High Life buckets during the game. Get there early as the place will fill out quickly.

FALSE ALARM.

Last night the bar was filled to the rafters with Yankee fans, hoping to see their team claim their 27th World Championship. However, they were disappointed when Yankee-Killer CLIFF LEE produced another gem for the Philadelphia Phillies to keep them alive, 8-6. While LEE's second stint wasn't nearly as mint as his first go-around, he did just enough to keep the Pinstripes from claiming victory and instead, forcing a Game 6 back in the Bronx this Wednesday night. First pitch: 8pm.






*As a result of the upcoming Game 6, there will be no Pub Trivia this week. Pub Trivia will return next Wednesday at 7pm!


UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE is back today with a fine lineup of matches (2:30pm), including the following: CHELSEA vs ATHELETICO MADRID, BAYERN MUNICH vs BORDEAUX, A.C. MILAN vs REAL MADRID, among key matchups. $4 Carlsberg bottles during all C. L. matches.

BREW CREW MARATHON PARTY HIGHLIGHTS

Sorry for the late post; BREW CREW SUNDAY, Week 8 took a lot out of me and as we all know, I don't posses the same "bounce back" from these events as I did in my youth. It was one of those days.

The day started out innocently enough. The NY Jets and Giants were both scheduled to play at the same time, which is always a pain in the ass. Fortunately for us, the NY Jets were scheduled to play the Miami Dolphins and the majority of our Dolphins fans were going to the game, so that freed up the TV's for us to put on other games. It was also NY Marathon Sunday, which meant that while the early part of the day was a little slow, it was going to get hectic later with the Marathon Party. Add to that mix the Yankees/Phillies game and it would make for a long day.

The usual suspects were there (AFRIKA BAMBATTA, T-BILL, SILENT BOB, DIRTY SANCHEZ, BIG BLACK) to get the hijinks going. NAPOLEON showed up a little later with a special guest from his hometown of Pittsburgh: LAMARR WOODLEY, all-pro linebacker of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are on a bye week so WOODLEY came to NY with a couple of buddies for a few days and somehow, someway, he and NAPOLEON made a connection and everyone ended up at the bar. He's a big boy. What was interesting was how he was totally into watching the other games, especially the Denver/Baltimore game; No doubt he was doing a little scouting for their upcoming game against the Broncos next Sunday. A very nice guy.

We also had a visit from SNY/TBS Baseball Anaylist and former NY Met, RON DARLING, who was spending the day in the neighborhood. He has some good friends that live near the bar and pops in from time to time. He ended up staying most of the afternoon, watching the games and chatting away with the patrons. A pretty good guy as well.

Things picked up quickly after 5pm, when the Marathon Party kicked in. Runners began trickling in and got a warm reception from the bar crowd. One runner in particular got more than she bargained for when she walked into the bar and not only got a warm reception from the crowd.... but a MARRIAGE PROPOSAL from her boyfriend, in front of everyone in the bar!






In the 17 years that I've been involved in Third and Long, I've known of many couples who met there and have gone on to get married; however, this is the first marriage proposal I'd ever actually seen at the bar. It was a surreal moment and the whole bar got into it. Pretty cool, and pretty ballsy on the groom's part. Congrats to the both of them!

The rest of the night, as predicted, turned into a night of debauchery as the booze flowed freely and spirits were high, especially when the NY Yankees pulled off an improbable victory over the Phillies to pull them within one game of winning the World Series. MR. LOW-KEY and SULLY T. tried to get everyone to buy me shots in an attempt to get me drunk for my birthday (almost worked); we also had late night fly-bys from BLONDE CHATTERBOX, AMY SMART and even THE DON. So the night (and the weekend) was a huge success and I'm pretty sure many folks are paying the price today (myself included).
