BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES... HERE COMES THE "BIG-O"!
Two days into the United Nations Summit and New Yorkers have been held hostage by major traffic tie-ups, packs of security details ferrying around "VIP's" and foreign dignitaries and the unsettling sight of police and military strapped to the hilt in artillery gear. To say it's been a royal pain in the ass is an understatement.
Now things will get much worse today as the "Big-O", President Obama rolls into town to make his appearance at the U.N. and you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be protests, even more traffic tie-ups and total chaos all around town. Get your popcorn ready.
FILE UNDER "Only in New York".... I had a rare afternoon off so I spent it running around, taking care of errands, meeting a friend for lunch, then taking in the movie "The Town" (which was pretty good, by the way). On the way back to the apartment I stopped by the bar to check in on things (I know, I know, I can't seem to stay away). There wasn't much going on at the moment; In fact, there was only one patron sitting at the bar, a young redhead, chatting with the bartender. I said my hellos to everyone and went to check on the usual bar stuff.
After a while, I found myself sitting upfront with FIRE MARSHALL ED, talking bar stuff when I felt a pair of eyes looking in our direction. It was the same young lady, occasionally glancing in our direction then going back to what looked like doodling on a napkin. As the bar began to fill up, some of the regulars began trickling in. MR. LOW-KEY showed up and sat next to us and we began chatting about stuff that regulars talk about when the young lady waved to get my attention. I looked at her and she passed along a napkin. I looked at it and on the napkin I found this:
On the back of the napkin she signed her name (Salla, from Helsinki, Finland) and left her phone number on it. While I found the piece to be nice, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Especially when some guy showed up a few minutes later and hung out with her for the rest of the time I was there. Intriguing to say the least.....
With all of the craziness of the U.N. Summit going on, that didn't stop revelers from partaking in our "Autumn Equinox" edition of "Dollar Draft Madness". Folks said good-bye to summer in Third and Long style, toasting mugs to the end of summer and to the beginning of the fall season.
Mugs flowed well into the night and when all was said and done, no one seemed to mind the plethora of cops milling about the neighborhood.
ANOTHER SIGN THAT FALL IS HERE: NHL Pre-season games began airing on the NHL Network last night. YES!!!! The regular season kicks off on October 7th and of course, Third and Long will carry NHL CENTER ICE once again for all of your hockey needs! Stay tuned for this season's hockey specials!
UFC 119 takes place this Saturday night and of course, we'll be carrying the PPV event, beginning at 9pm when the preliminary bouts kick off on Spike TV. As always, we recommend that everyone get there early as we tend to reach capacity quickly and once that happens, you'll be shut out of the fun.
Matches include:
FRANK MIR vs MIRKO CRO COP
RYAN BADER vs ANTONIO ROGERIO NOGUEIRA
MATT SERRA vs CHRIS LYTLE
SEAN SHERK vs EVAN DUNHAM
MELVIN GUILLARD vs JEREMY STEPHENS
