While the summer season is usually the time to have fun with family and friends, every so often you get some news that puts a damper to the season. This was one of those weekends.
It was disturbing and sad to hear about the deaths of the Navy SEALS at the hands of the Taliban on Saturday. Apparently they were answering a distress call from another elite unit who needed assistance. (read the article HERE). With our troops taking out Bin Laden a few months back, it was a matter of time before they exacted some sort of revenge. Unfortunately for our Navy SEALS, it looks as if they were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time while trying to do the job they were trained to do. As a result, we lost at least 30 great and talented soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the cause. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families. Another sad reminder that the fight continues.
Closer to home, we lost one of our neighbors after a long battle with cancer. Eileen was the longest-living tenant in our building, having lived here even before the bar opened 20 years ago. Anyone who knew her found her to be a feisty old soul who wasn't afraid to rip you a new one if something wasn't being done or if you were out of line; Yet at the same time, she would be the first one to give you the shirt off of her back if you needed help. She was a fine lady and a great neighbor and her passing will definitely be felt throughout the building, she had such an impact. It's going to be strange not seeing her pass by and waving each night. She will be missed.
*sigh*
