Tonight all eyes turn to Yankee Stadium as "The Captain", Derek Jeter lumbers his way towards the magic 3,000 hit mark. As of today, he's only 3 hits away from the magic number. And with a four-game-homestand vs Tampa Bay before the All-Star break, chances are pretty good that he should eclipse that number.
If/when he does break that magic number, what kind of ceremony will the NY Yankees do for him? What kind of "token of appreciation" will he receive? Quite frankly, I'm more interested in that than him actually achieving the feat itself. Call me cheezy. Yankee fans, tell me what you think will happen when he finally breaks the mark. You surely know better than me.
Great times at Pub Trivia last night, and a lot of funny team names. More creative than usual, that's for sure! We continue to see new faces and it was also great to see the return of some of our original Trivia buffs.
Check out the rest of the pics on our FACEBOOK page!
BEST NEWS OF THE DAY: Our AC unit got its mid-summer tune up today. And not a moment too soon! All I know that with the weather being so hot and sticky the last couple of days, it better be nipple-popping cold in the bar! (Oof! Did I just say that?)
TONIGHT: Check out Derek Jeter in his quest for 3,000 hits tonight vs Tampa Bay (7pm) during our "After-Work Happy Hour", featuring $4 domestic drafts/well drinks/sangria (5-10pm)!
Stay cool folks!
Cheers!
Follow the daily interactions of an affable bar manager of pretty cool and not-so-typical watering hole in NYC, in a not-so-typical neighborhood, Murray Hill. There may be some blurbs overheard at the bar, stimulating observations and random thoughts on random things. So be careful, you never know what might end up here....Enjoy and welcome to my world!

MEMO to the NFL: "WORK IT OUT!"
Last night felt like I was in a time warp back to the 1980's. The crowd was decidedly older than normal for a Tuesday night; The jukebox belted out nothing but tunes from the "Brat Pack" era and if you looked closely enough, you could have sworn you saw some vintage fashions from back in the day.
In any case, the large group of nostalgia fans seemed to be having a great time and that's all that matters. With the post-holiday hangover looming over 3rd Avenue, I was more than happy with the crowd we got, so if they wanted to blast "St. Elmo's Fire" all night long, god bless 'em.
As I try to enjoy life post-hockey season, a lot of the chatter at the bar of late revolves around the NFL and the current lockout. With that being said, I find myself being asked more and more: "What are you going to do if there's no football?". If you were to ask me that question months ago, I would have laughed it off. The NFL and the players wouldn't be that stupid as to shut down the season and turn off a legion of fans as well as risk their standing as America's #1 sport. Would they?
However, with training camps traditionally scheduled to open this weekend and no deal in sight, I am finding myself (along with countless others) worried. What if these knuckleheads don't get a deal done? What will we do on Sundays in the Fall? Yeah, there are more pressing issues going on in the world when you look at the big picture, but in a traditional American sense, this is kind of a big deal.
Americans by and large, work hard all week and live for the weekend. It's their chance to unwind, blow off steam and yes, watch football. Let's face it, football is ingrained into our lives, a big part of our social fabric. Whether it be through the NFL, NCAA, fantasy football, or simply playing in the backyard with your mates or kids, it's something we look forward to and enjoy. We equate the Fall with football and the thoughts of not having it around to be honest, is quite disturbing. And don't get me started on how not having the NFL around would affect business. You talk to any bar manager and they will all tell you that not having the NFL on Sundays would be nothing short of devastating for their bottom line.
Let's examine for a moment, life at Third and Long (for example) without NFL football. Sure, you can throw on some "alternate sports programming" to fill in the time. But seriously speaking (and no offense to the other sports being mentioned), but are the DOLFANS NYC gang going to roll in to watch English Premier Soccer at 10am? I don't think so. Will the CORNER BOYS continue their streak of being the first ones at the bar to watch NASCAR? (well, you never know with them, but I doubt it). Will the likes of AFRIKA BAMBATTA or T-BILL, SILENT BOB or NAPOLEON DYNAMITE gather for a rescheduled NCAA game between Western Michigan and Ohio University? Chile please. It ain't happening.
This, my friends, is what we're facing if the NFL doesn't get their act together. And quite frankly, it scares me. And if you're a football fan, it should scare you too. So if there's anyone from the NFL reading this, spread the word to your brethren and WORK IT OUT!
TONIGHT: Pub Trivia (8pm). Free to play and great prizes up for grabs such as bar tabs, cool bar swag and of course, buckets of beer! Tonight's theme? CONCERTS. $4 Mixed Well Drinks (for ladies), $4 pints, Greenport Harbor beers (3 to choose from) & $20 Full Sail Session Ale buckets ALL NIGHT!
See you tonight!
Cheers!

BACK to the GRIND
We're back to normal today after a long, relaxing holiday weekend. And by the looks of people I see in the street, it looks as if most of you could stand to use a vacation day to recover from your vacation! Now that the 4th of July holiday is finally behind us, it's time to cruise through the month of (hopefully) delightful summer days and nights ahead of us.
As expected, we were treated to a wonderful fireworks display, thanks to Macy's Department Store. The colors really popped on our TV's here at the bar, which, unfortunately, was the only place us folks on the East Side of Manhattan could see the display. On TV. Just a not-so-subtle jab at the folks who decided that moving the Fireworks show from the East River to the West Side of Manhattan was a good thing. Thanks.
As I write this quick post, I'm watching the reactions on TV of the not-guilty verdict in the infamous Casey Anthony trial. My sense of this is that most people are STUNNED by the verdict reached by the jury, with many of them comparing this to the O.J. Simpson verdict years back. Crazy stuff.
ONE and DONE: If you happen to swing by the bar in the next day or two, make sure you try out our GREENPORT HARBOR beers, as they are only here for a very short time. Currently on tap: CITRUS IPA (Cask-conditioned Ale), HARVE ROUGE and the HARBOR ALE (on draft). It's only here until the end of the week so have one and share your thoughts on them here!
TONIGHT: Dollar Draft Madness ($1 Bud/Bud Light mugs) rules the night as our weekly grandaddy of drink specials hold court. Dollar Draft Madness has been running at Third and Long ever since we opened in 1991 and it continues to bring smiles to everyone's faces! Grab the work buddies and swap stories of the holiday weekend over a couple of mugs!
That's all I got for now.
Cheers!

HAPPY FOURTH from THIRD and LONG!
HAPPY 4th OF JULY from the gang at THIRD and LONG!
Even though Macy's has taken it's Annual Fireworks Celebration over to the "Westsiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide" this year, it doesn't mean that we can't throw a good pre-game "tailgate" before the show. That being said, in honor of the birthday of our great country, we'll be slinging up $3 PBR cans, $2 domestic draft mugs and 2-for-1 Wine/Sangria by the glass before AND after the festivities!
So come celebrate USA's birthday #235 with us!
