Last night we offered the live airing of the UFC Pay-per-View event "UFC 88: LIDDELL vs EVANS" for our patrons. Usually when a UFC event comes up, we field a lot of calls for the fights, only to pass on it. This time around, with the bar reopening after renovations, we figured this would be a good way to give back to those patrons who always asked for it. So we booked it, expecting a good turnout and a great card. One thing we didn't anticipate when booking the card: TROPICAL STORM HANNAH.
As it turns out, HANNAH put a monkey wrench into everyone's plans, dropping torrential rains throughout the day and into the night; just enough to discourage folks from coming out. As a result, the turnout was less than expected. However, those who braved the elements were treated to a colorful card, filled with hardcore ultimate fighting action. The highlight of the event was the Main Event itself: UFC Legend CHUCK LIDDELL facing off against underdog RASHAD EVANS, who's no slouch himself.
The first round between the two saw the two combatants for the most part, circling around the octagon ring, feeling each other out. As the crowd got a bit restless, they got what they wanted- a fierce and fast knockout: unexpected however, was the person who got knocked out- fan favorite CHUCK LIDDELL. He walked right into a blazing overhand right hand that simply knocked him into 2009. It was stunning, brutal, yet beautifully placed all at once. EVANS literally lifted LIDDELL off of his feet and into dreamland. A shocker indeed.
