LADIES WIN! LADIES WIN!
It appears that the ladies of NYC will get preferential treatment after all. ROY DEN HOLLANDER filed a lawsuit claiming that "ladies nights" at bars, restaurants and clubs discriminated against men.
A judge in Manhattan's Federal Court disagreed, saying that clubs and bars can price their products any way they wish because they're not acting as representatives of the state. You can read the full article HERE.
Sorry Charlie.
SPEAKING of ladies, I'm looking forward to seeing one in particular today. One of our bartenders, the adorable AMY SMART is a diehard Cincinnati Bengals fan (which is sacrilegious) while yours truly is a fan of the Cleveland Browns (known by you lot as "America's Team"). So when we realized that our respective teams would be playing each other, naturally a wager was in order. So after much contemplation (mostly on my part), we came up with this bet:
If Cincinnati won, I would have to 1) Paint my face the colors of the team (orange/black stripes); 2) Wear a Bengals jersey.. all of this while bartending.
If Cleveland won, SHE would have to 1) Paint her face wearing the beautiful colors of the team (orange/brown, with Brady Quinn's number painted) and bartend a full afternoon with such makeup; 2) bake me some cookies with the Browns logo on it.
I also threw in a pedicure, but for some strange reason, she balked on it. Can't figure out why.
So after the smoke cleared on what turned out to be a rather dull game, the final score was:
CLEVELAND 20
CINCINNATI 12
Wonder what that means? Heh...heh...heh....
Soccer enthusiasts take note: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE play resumes today and we'll carry live the matches featuring VILLAREAL vs CELTIC FC and MANCHESTER UNITED vs AALBORG FC (2:45pm), and REAL MADRID vs FC ZENIT ST. PETERSBURG (5pm, tape delay). So if you find yourselves with a free day due to the Jewish holidays, feel free to join us!
DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS ($1.00 Bud/Bud Light mugs) continues tonight!
DON'T FORGET TRIVIA NIGHT on Wednesday! This week's theme: "Every Four Years"......

Follow the daily interactions of an affable bar manager of pretty cool and not-so-typical watering hole in NYC, in a not-so-typical neighborhood, Murray Hill. There may be some blurbs overheard at the bar, stimulating observations and random thoughts on random things. So be careful, you never know what might end up here....Enjoy and welcome to my world!

FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS.....
While the bar had yet another busy edition of DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS, yours truly found himself spending his Tuesday night participating in a focus group.
For those of you who are out of the loop, a Focus Group is when a company brings a group of people together to gauge their thoughts/feelings on the topic of the day. Usually the topic is related to a specific product, whether it be a brand of detergent, alcohol, a movie, TV show, etc. You state your opinions on the topic, write some notes, then walk out of there with a nice little envelope.... of cash! It's a sweetheart gig if you can get it- where else can you make $30-250 for a couple of hours of sharing your opinion? And did I mention that it's paid in cash??
Our topic of the day was ESPN Insider, the "exclusive content" offered to subscribers of ESPN.com. Not the most exciting topic but hey, for $100., you suck it up and pretend to be interested. Oh and did I mention that they also feed you too?? So you get fed and paid in cash, just for an hour or two of your time!
Now, I'm not going to be that "a-hole" that keeps the goodies for himself. Here's where you can find Focus Groups to sign up for. Trust me, it's the easiest money you'll ever make: Click HERE
Just remember to buy me lunch sometime... or buy a shirt(see Swandad's Shop on the right)!
TONIGHT: Ladies Night (5pm-close). It's Hump Day and tonight, we focus on the ladies. With $3.00 Mixed Well Drinks (for ladies only), $5.00 Cosmos/Appletinis and $1.00 off ALL Imported Beers, it's a nice way to re-group and focus (again with that word) on the rest of the week! Girls, this is a chance for you to catch up with your girlfriends, and fellas, this is your chance to possibly meet a cutie (or two).
In the meantime, I gotta go open up shop!

NICE NIGHT TO BE A LADY!
Ladies Night at Third and Long proved to be a fun-filled affair thanks to a couple of cute guest bartenders (COURTNEY and TIFFANY). They added some flair to the evening and as a result, the turnout was more than I expected, which was great. Between the great drink specials, eclectic music and plenty of banter taking place, all of the ladies that turned out seemed to have a really good time and many of them stayed well into the night (the guys didn't seem to mind either). FRENCHY was also behind the bar to lend some much-needed support and the three of them gelled well as a team.
I tip my hat off to the team of FRENCHY, COURTNEY and TIFFANY; Thanks for a job well done!
STORK ALERT!
Our own CHEF TELL became a proud papa yesterday! He and his lovely wife JAMIE became the proud parents of a 7lb 5oz, 19 inch baby boy, (Hudson James Booth) and both mom and baby are doing "extremely well"! Congrats from the Third and Long family and may you have many, many more!
DIMWITS OF THE NIGHT: A group of knuckleheads from Boston College were hanging out in the back of the bar, shooting the breeze, causing no problems. At the end of the night, they go to leave the bar and for some inexplicable reason, decided to mess with the two Nitrogen tanks situated outside the bar. The tanks were placed on the corner by Verizon to keep the phone lines under the street from overheating. While I've been assured that the tanks are harmless, it still doesn't make me feel good when I see a group of idiots screwing around with the tanks for laughs.
So I see the dimwits turning on the valves and all kinds of nitrogen smoke flying out of it and a couple of the guys trying to make snowballs out of the forming ice. I yell at them to stop messing with the tanks and they sheepishly go to walk away. You'd think that would be the end of it.... Unfortunately we're dealing with idiots here.
Fifteen minutes later I look outside and there they are, screwing with the tanks and dancing in the misty smoke again! I walk outside and start yelling at them to leave the tanks alone; One of the dimwits decide he wants to challenge me by asking if I owned the tanks and why did I care. As soon as I began to answer back, some poetic justice came by dressed up as an undercover police car. Two cops jump out of the car and began busting balls big time. Talk about perfect timing.
I couldn't help but to crack a smile as I came back inside. Talk about dimwits!
TONIGHT: "Bucket o' Lights" with Miller Lite, Coors Light or Michelob Light buckets (5/$15.00) , from 5-10pm! Baseball is back on the agenda so catch all of your favorite teams with our MLB package!
Thanks to MURPHGUIDE.COM for highlighting us in their weekly newsletter!

OH AND ONE MORE THING.....
For all of you "fashionistas" that read the blog- a while back I did a profile on the BECKERMAN sisters, fashion designers and friends of the bar (and myself); They were highlighted again in this week's Time Out NY Magazine (see r.) and are sponsoring a Sample Sale this weekend. If you are interested and want an exclusive invite, click onto their Facebook page HERE
I'm sure there will be something for all of your styles and tastes! Tell them that I sent ya!
Don't forget about the British Open!!! Catch the highlights here!

LADIES NIGHT- WHAT A NIGHT!
Sorry for the late post- TIME WARNER decided to play around with our signal again so I was out of service for a while.
Last night was LADIES NIGHT at the bar and for a change, instead of the typical low-key night we tend to find on Wednesdays, the place was bustling with activity ALL NIGHT LONG! With tourists pouring in for the Fourth of July Weekend and locals getting their last hurrah in before getting out of town for the same weekend, 3rd Avenue was teeming with activity. It was so busy at one point that OPIE CUNNINGHAM and myself had to pitch in to help out with glasses and empties. Good stuff.
My only regret is that I didn't have my camera with me for candids. There were a nice bit of talent that came through the doors throughout the night. Sorry fellas, I'll plan better next time.
MINI-CELEBRITY SIGHTING: While I was outside the bar, surveying the avenue, a familiar face walked by. It took me a minute to recognize him, but when I yelled out his name and he turned around and smiled, I knew I wasn't seeing things. It was
DAN PATRICK (former ESPN Sportscenter anchor).
He used to frequent our bar years ago, in the bar's infancy. Really nice and outgoing guy.
WEEKEND HAPPENINGS:
Thursday: BUCKET 'o LIGHTS NIGHT (5pm-10pm). Buckets of Miller Lite, Coors Light or Michelob Light, $15.00 (for a bucket of five)!
Friday: (Bar opens at 4pm): PRE-FIREWORKS HAPPY HOUR (5pm-10pm). $4.00 Draft Beers and Mixed Well Drinks. PBR BUCKET SPECIAL: 5 PBR cans for $10.00 (or $3.00 ea.).
Saturday: (Bar opens at 4pm): "KICK THE KEG SATURDAY" (4pm-10pm). $2.00 mugs, ALL BEERS ON TAP!
Sunday: Closed. Reopen at regular business hours on Monday!
BIRTHDAY WISHES go out to OPIE CUNNINGHAM (7/5) and T-BILL(7/7)!
That's it for now! Hope you have a great weekend!!!
