Guess what's in store for all of us New Yorkers, starting today? Oh yes, GRIDLOCK HELL is back! The Annual United Nations Summit starts today and that means a week of traffic jams, police escorts, foreign dignitaries, protests galore... you name it, we're gettin' it. So, plan accordingly. It's going to be a royal pain in the ass.
Yesterday's edition of BREW CREW SUNDAYS proved to be a more laid back and sedate afternoon (sedate as far as BREW CREW SUNDAYS go). The neighborhood as a whole was pretty quiet all weekend long for the most part. We were missing some of our regulars, sidetracked no doubt by travel itineraries, work or hangover issues. Despite that, we still had a pretty good time throughout the day. Some highlights included
*Meeting the long-lost twin of BOBBY DEWARS. Talk about "Separated at Birth"!
*My encounter with what may have been the most hyper young lady I've ever met. This young lady came in wearing sunglasses, and the first thing she ordered was a Red Bull/Vodka. After a couple of sips, it was AWNNNNNN! She began talking and laughing non-stop for what seemed like hours. Hell, I even got tired just listening to her. Bless her heart.
*The biggest burger I've ever seen. Easily. Not sure where these folks ordered it from; I'm inclined to lean towards JACKSON HOLE, since they are known for their rather large burgers. But then again, who knows for sure. All I know is that this was one huge mo-fo of a burger!
*The Stranger from BUFFALO, NY. This guy is obviously a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills. He travels to McFadden's Pub on East 42nd Street to watch his beloved team plays (it's a HUGE Buffalo Bills bar). But for some reason, the last three weeks he's made it a point to stop by our place after the game to have ONE pint of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. The first time he did this was on Week One. The Bills won their opener and he staggered in and plopped down on an empty stool and ordered a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. He took a couple of sips, almost passed out, tried to pay twice for the same beer, and eventually left.
The Bills Fan said that he thought it was a good omen that he come here because every time he'd come here, his team won the following week. So he didn't want to rock the boat. And sure enough, the Bills won again on Sunday and within a half hour he was back, ordering his Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. Weird but funny.
*Actually being able to hear the TV's. Not that much yelling and screaming due the M.I.A. of some of the more "vocal" regulars. While the antics of the missing few was itself missed, there was a sense of relief to be able to just chill out and watch the games for once, without having to shout over one another, just to make a point.
Overall, another successful afternoon (almost successful- the damn Browns lost again), despite the quiet weekend.
NY JETS vs SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (8pm)!
See you tonight!
