Today we in the bar business celebrate a special day. Today, my friend is REPEAL DAY , the 75th anniversary of the day our government "repealed" the Eighteenth Amendment and gave Americans the constitutional right to consume alcohol. Before that, in 1919, Congress passed the Volstead Act, which in effect, made it illegal to consume alcohol, which at the time was thought to have caused many of the social problems of the day. By passing this law, the government thought it would bring an end to public drunkenness, poverty, crime and mental illness, just to name a few of the "social ills" of the day.
What was thought to be a law to help curb social ills, Prohibition had the opposite effect. People wanted to drink even more; crime grew through organized gangs fighting to provide the service and product that everyone clamored for. After years of watching Prohibition cause more problems than it solved, the states finally came together and repealed the Act on December 5, 1933, making it legal to enjoy a drink as a U.S. citizen again.
So when you get out of work this afternoon and you meet up with your co-workers or friends for that first cocktail to kick off your weekend, make sure you take a moment to raise your glass to the end of Prohibition. 75 years and going strong. CHEERS!
