Just had the opportunity to check out "Slumdog Millionaire", the new film by Danny Boyle, the director of "Trainspotting" and "28 Days Later". It's one of those rare films that makes you feel good and sad simultaneously, without being overly sentimental or mushy.
In a nutshell, the film is about a poor, uneducated young man from Mumbai, India (site of the recent bombing attacks), who finds himself on the verge of winning (approx. 20,000,000 rupees$409,332.86US at the time of this writing), on India's version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". Before he gets to tackle the final question, the show goes off the air due to "time constraints", and to leave the TV audience hanging. Next thing you know, our lead is in a police station, being interrogated by the local police on charge of cheating. From there the movie takes off at a rapid, dizzying pace. It veers back and forth from various points in the protagonist's life to the TV show and back to the police station, revealing more and more about him and how he got to the twentieth question on the TV show.
Throughout the film you see and feel the harsh realities of life in the caste system of India; some moments are funny ones, others are tender and yet even more are disturbingly violent. Yet throughout all of that, you can't help but to get sucked in and wonder what happens in the end, which is what a good film should do. This film received great reviews for a reason, and after checking it out for myself, I have to say this film did not disappoint.
And for the fellas out there, as an added bonus, the female lead of the film, Latika (played by Freida Pinto), is a stunning piece of ass. Smokin'.
If you are looking for a great feel-good, entertaining movie to watch this weekend, add "Slumdog Millionaire" to your list. You won't regret it.
