AND WE'RE OFF!
Last night saw the official return of the NFL season as the New Orleans Saints started the defense of their Super Bowl title against the Minnesota Vikings. Football fans and fantasy sports fans were excited for this moment and the way the game started out, it looked as if they wouldn't be disappointed. The Saints marched straight down the field and looked like the Super Bowl team of last year, scoring quickly and setting the Vikings back on their heels. Minnesota fans had reason to panic. Eventually the Vikings settled down and got back into the game, even taking the lead at one point.
The pace of the game all of a sudden slowed down to a miserable pace and what started out as a dogfight, turned into a bit of a snoozefest, as the Saints held on to win a close game, 14-9. Ok so the first game of the season wasn't the best game we'd seen in a long time, however, it still signaled the beginning of the season and for that, we're grateful.
After the game, I half-expected the bar to die down, with the Jewish holidays being upon us and all. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the bar not only stayed busy, it actually got busier as the night went on! Go figure!
We were then treated to some late night excitement as a trail of fire trucks went racing by the bar. Not one or two fire trucks, mind you, but at least eight different fire trucks, roaring by the bar en route to a fire. As it turns out, the fire was very close to us; The Frontier Coffee Shop on 3rd Avenue and 39th Street caught fire and it took numerous firemen to deal with it. As a matter of fact, at 4:50am, the fire was still being dealt with.
It sucks to see a diner such as the Frontier go up in flames. It had been around for at least 30 years. What a shame....
My apologies again for a lack of a post yesterday. My Internet connection had been spotty as heck all day long and as a result, I wasn't able to log until late in the day and even then, the connection was spotty, at best.
The night ended up being one of the latest we've experienced in quite a long time. By the time last call came about, there were plenty of couples enjoying each other's "company" . It was a bit bizarre to say the least.
That's it for now. Look out for my follow up post later in the afternoon. Thanks for reading and I'll catch you soon.
