2992: THE FINAL POST.

June 26th, 2013.  The final night at Third and Long turned out to be a memorable, bittersweet night.  A night where we found ourselves being overwhelmed by an outpouring of love and support from friends of the bar from the past 20-plus years.  It was sad and beautiful all at once.  To listen to Matt and Jim Long share memorable stories and watching the various reactions of everyone in the bar was something that I will always carry with me for the rest of my life.

And getting to speak to various individuals from both the present and the past and listening to their favorite Third and Long moments was something that I truly enjoyed as well.  The fact that people were willing to sit in a hot, sweaty bar to pay respects to our bar says a lot.  This, of course, made me feel even sadder that all of this was soon going to end.

I had more than one person ask me throughout the course of the evening this one question:  "What was the most memorable event that you can recall in all of the years you were here?"  And to be honest, there were so many moments that stood out over the years that I could probably write a book on them.  Hell, I've probably forgotten more memorable moments that most people could have experienced at the bar in their lifetime.

However, if you had to put a gun to my head and made me choose a specific moment that stood out for me, I'd have to go back to the Gold Medal game between Team USA and Canada during the Vancouver Winter Olympics.  That was such a magical event where you had a bar filled with fanatical fans of both countries, dressed in their country's colors and cheering passionately for their respective teams.  To make it even better, both teams played such an epic game that you couldn't help but to get caught up in the frenzy.  Long story short, it was the best game I'd ever seen with a group of patrons at the bar.  Hands down (click the link for the full story).

The one frustration that I had with the night was the fact that my iPhone battery died early into the night, so I didn't get to take as many photos as I would have liked.  However, I did get to see some of the Vine/Instagram posts from the night and it made me feel good yet sad at the same time.  That being said, if any of you were present at the goodbye festivities, PLEASE post any photos you may have on our Facebook page.  It would mean a lot to me.

And by the time we finally called "LAST CALL" at the end of the night, it really became real.  We had a good number of patrons who were reluctant to leave- some were even adamant about not wanting to leave.  But the sad reality was that this was it- it was time to raise the lights on a 22-year run.

As I wind down my 2,992nd post, it suddenly dawns on me that this is the last post that I will ever write for this blog.  I mean, if there's no more bar.... it's only right that I retire the blog as well.  After 8 1/2 years of posts, it's the right time.

But before I sign off for the last time, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, it's been an honor to be a part of the Third and Long Family for the past 21 years.  I want to send a special thank you to MATT and JIM LONG for giving me an opportunity back in 1992 after a chance meeting in the Hamptons.  If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have all of the experiences and memories I leave with today.

I also want to pay a special homage to all of the great staff that I had the pleasure of working with over the years.  From the managers I had, to the co-managers I worked along side by side with, to the employees that worked for me- It was because of you that I enjoyed going to work each and every night.  Our "family" was and will forever be a tight knit one;  A family that even after moving on, can still connect and pick up where we left off without skipping a beat.  That's rare to find in any occupation.

And finally, I want to acknowledge you, the patrons.  As much as we enjoyed working at Third and Long, the bar wouldn't have had the 22 year run it had without you.  A good friend from across the pond said it best:  "Good people make a pub".  In my eyes, we couldn't be what we were without you.  You accepted us for what we were: A neighborhood pub who knew how to treat its customers right.  In many cases, I've gained wonderful friendships from individuals who started out as patrons.  And for that, we will always thank you.

So with that, I'll leave you with this quote from "The Office" that pretty much sums up Third and Long:

"No matter how you get there or where you end up, human beings have this miraculous gift to make that place home."

And that definitely held true here.

Thanks for the memories....

HAPPY TRAILS....

It seems that there is now some prime piece of real estate up for grabs as the PONDEROSA is now without an owner. The last original member of the Cartwright family, Adam (played by PERNELL ROBERTS) from the show BONANZA, passed away yesterday at the age of 81.

Roberts (second from right), played the role of Adam Cartwright for six seasons before leaving the show to act in films and on stage. He later returned to TV in the early 80's to star in the TV hit series, TRAPPER JOHN M.D. , two of my favorite shows.

Happy trails.....

WANNABE HIPSTERS SUCK.

That's my conclusion after working Dollar Draft Madness last night. After witnessing the snarky attitudes of the wannabes and the tightly closed change purses they carry, I've decided that they are now on my list of people to detest. It's bad enough that these little shits try to portray themselves as cool and hip, with their hip-hop look, tilted baseball caps and peacock strutting around the bar. It's equally bad when they snap their fingers at the bartenders to demand service and yelling out "Yo" with the look of aloofness. But to do that, then order ten to twenty mugs of beers at a clip and consistently leave NO tip... then on top of that, not bother to bring up their empty mugs... then enough is enough.

So I am officially putting these little fuckers on my "SUCK ASS" List and immediately moving them to second place on the list, just behind cancer and ahead of Bin Laden and bunions.

Pub Trivia is back tonight, with the continuation of the TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS. We invite you and your friends to come and compete for a chance to participate in the finals in March! Free to play and plenty of cool prizes to be won, including bar tabs, buckets of beer and other cool swag! Registration begins at 7pm and the fun starts at 8! You think you got what it takes to get into the finals? Show us what you got! Great drink specials all night long!

HAPPY TRAILS, PT 2.

First we get the news of the passing of comedian BERNIE MAC; now we get news of the passing of R & B icon, ISAAC HAYES. A huge music superstar and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from the late 60's/70's, he personified what coolness was back in the day.

HAYES was a talented musician who also dabbled in acting from time to time, ranging from the "blaxploitation" films of the 70's, to lending his voice as the popular "Chef" in the highly-rated "South Park" TV series.

ISAAC HAYES was scheduled to appear in the upcoming film SOUL MEN, featuring (ironically enough), BERNIE MAC and SAMUEL L. JACKSON. How creepy is that?

Hmmmm.. they say famous deaths happen in threes.... Mr. Jackson, I'd get to a doctor if I were you.... I'm just sayin'.

Pouring out a glass of Coors Banquet to those who are no longer with us. You will be missed.

IT'S ALMOST FIREWORKS TIME!

Sorry for the long gap in between posts; Don't want to really get into the particulars, but let's just say it's been one of those weekends.....

As we begin a new week, it just dawned on me that we're already into July and the Fourth of July holiday weekend! Damn time sure flies! We've had our share of extremely hot days thus far and there's no end in sight. And with our dear friends at CON EDISON talking about going on strike, let's just say that I'm somewhat nervous about the state of our A.C. output. Keep your fingers crossed folks.

So what's on the agenda for the Fourth of July? Since the holiday falls on a Friday this year, it's somewhat difficult to predict what the masses will do. I'm sure there will be the usual exodus out of the city with folks headed to the Hamptons, Jersey Shore, or the Poconos. That being said, with the gas prices being what they are these days and the crazy shenanigans of the airline industry, we may find more people staying close to home this time around.

Macy's will hold their Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration on the East River that night. Since we are only three blocks from the river, we usually get a good crowd at the bar before AND after the fireworks. And as tradition dictates, we always serve up our classic Red, White and Blue special: Pabst Blue Ribbon Buckets 5/$10.00 (or $3.00ea.), all night long! That goes along with our regular Friday Happy Hour Special ($4.00 all Draft Beers and Mixed Well Drinks, 5-10pm), which makes for an enjoyable Fourth of July all around!

HOLIDAY WEEKEND SCHEDULE:

Friday, July 4: 4pm-close

Saturday, July 5: 4pm- close

Sunday, July 6: CLOSED

EURO '08: Congrats to SPAIN on a hard-fought, well-deserved victory over GERMANY in yesterday's EURO '08 Final, 1-0.

The tournament itself was (for the most part), smoothly run and pretty exciting to follow. It was a nice shot in the arm for the bar as it brought about a whole new set of patrons that we wouldn't have seen normally. It never ceases to amaze me the passion that follows this sport. Granted, for a place like ours, the only time we really get to experience it is during worldwide events such as the Euro Cup or the World Cup, however, every time one of these events take place, the passionate fans of various countries come out in full force and it is a sight to behold.

HAPPY TRAILS

One of our regulars got a sweet fellowship gig in Washington D.C. and a group of his friends decided to throw him a going-away party on Thursday night. It's always nice to see groups of close friends getting together for various reasons, especially when it's something like a going away party. While D.C. is only four hours away, I'm sure he will be missed by all. Good luck in D.C.!

Good Luck in D.C. Joe!

Is poor Lenny ready to puke here? Hope not...

Again, sincere apologies for the lack of posts the past few days. A lot of stuff going on behind the scenes.... and there's only but so much time in my day. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
