WRAPPING UP THE LAST WEEK OF SUMMER...

Today marks the beginning of the end.  Yes, the last "unofficial" week of the Summer Season begins today and runs through the upcoming Labor Day Weekend.  And of course, what better way to start off the last week of Summer than with a torrential downpour, right at lunchtime.  It rained so hard, it even drove the dear Professor off the street, which you almost never see!

With the last week of the summer, you usually find the streets of NYC quieter than usual.  The locals are away, trying to take advantage of the last few days at the beach.  Which leaves us with tourists, college students back to school and bridge/tunnel types, looking to take advantage of an empty city.  Definitely a mixed bag.

Some things to look forward to:  The US Open kicks off today in Queens, and that's always a treat.  With the US Open, we get our fair share of tennis fans in town to check out the matches, and of course, we always look forward to our annual visit from JAMES BLAKE and his infamous "JBlock" Crew; They are a fun and entertaining group.

Another sign that summer is about to end: College football officially kicks off this Thursday with a full slate of games, as well as a couple of interesting matchups this weekend, including NOTRE DAME vs NAVY (in Dublin), and ALABAMA vs MICHIGAN in Cowboys Stadium.

Sadly, one additional thing takes place this week.  It's AMY SMART's last week with us here at Third and Long, after four great years.  During that time, she has consistently been one of our most popular bartenders, among the patrons and staff alike.  Her charm and wit will be missed dearly.  So if you are around between now and Wednesday, make sure you stop by and say goodbye to one of the good ones.  She'll appreciate the well-wishes!  And if you are around this Wednesday, make sure to join us for a special edition of Pub Trivia, where the theme for the night will be MUSTACHES, in tribute to AMY SMART's favorite fetish.  And we encourage everyone to wear a 'stache (real or otherwise), which will entitle you to special drink deals all night long!  Should be a great send-off!

TONIGHT: "MONDAY NIGHT UNWIND" ($2 domestic drafts, 2-for-1 Wine/Sangria all night)!  MLB Package, NY Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays and CFL Football (Toronto vs Edmonton), plus more US Open action!

Cheers!

PARTY TIME, AMY SMART STYLE!

I want to apologize for the lack of posts the last few days; No real reason for it aside from the lack of time to write a concrete post. It happens from time to time. What can I say?

Last night's edition of Dollar Draft Madness was highlighted by the get-together of AMY SMART's closest friends to celebrate the completion of her Associates Degree from Hunter College. Good job kiddo!

AMY SMART and her posse ended up partying the night away and I think their spirit had an effect on the rest of the bar because by the time midnight rolled around, the bar turned into "Club Third and Long"!

WHOA! Where did those come from??

These folks were dancing the night away and without a care in the world, even as the dreaded snowstorm approached the area.....

TONIGHT: "Wednesday Night Pub Trivia: Super Bowl Edition" (8pm). Join us as we hold a special "Super Bowl" themed Pub Trivia competition, with a special prize for the winning team: a $50.00 bar tab, good for the upcoming Super Bowl Bash at Third and Long this weekend! Registration begins at 7pm and the festivities begin at 8! $3.00 Mixed Well Drinks (for ladies) and buckets of Bud Light Cans (6/$15.00) highlight the drink specials for the evening! Hope to see you there!

FIVE QUESTIONS......

It's Wednesday night and we find ourselves in the middle of the "post-holiday funk" that I always talk about; The "Post-Holiday Funk" (for those of you out of the loop), is the week that follows a long holiday weekend; Most of the bars/restaurants experience a "dip" in business, mainly because everyone is exhausted and more importantly, b-r-o-k-e from partying hard in the Hamptons, Jersey Shore, or (fill in the blank).

Since we had some "downtime", I figured it was as good a time as any to have the blog folks get to know some of our newer employees. So I decided to interview SCUBA STEVE and AMY SMART.

SCUBA STEVE, originally from Rockaway Beach, NY has been with THIRD and LONG for almost a year now, while AMY SMART (see the resemblance) is from Dayton, OH and just joined our staff last week. Armed with five fascinating questions from yours truly, here's the mini-interview:

Q: How long have you been bartending?
SS: Eight years.
AS: Two years.

Q: What's your most memorable "pick-up" line?
SS: "Do you like chicken? Grab a wing!"
AS: A yes/no checkbox on a bar napkin asking if I'd go for dinner- with a rough draft poorly crossed out at the top!

Q: What tourists are the best/worst tippers?
AS: Best: Irish.(strike that- this was written before she got a ONE CENT tip from a couple of girls from Ireland). Worst: French (unless you count the two guys who just left me fifty cents on a $14.00 tab!).
SS: Best: Asians ("They can't see their money when they're drunk"). Worst: People who say "Keep the change", because usually it's just that: Change.

Q: What is your best/worst bartending experience?
SS: Working with AMY SMART (worst)
AS: Working with SCUBA STEVE (best)

Q: Interesting. Here's the curveball question for you. If you had to either:

a) Slide down a rusty razorblade into a vat of rubbing alcohol

b) Roll/crall through a maze of horse poo blindfolded

c) Have hot-funky-sweaty-mofongo sex with OPRAH WINFREY or MICHAEL MOORE

And the life of your significant other hung in the balance, which would you do?

SS: C, MICHAEL MOORE- he looks like Peter from Family Guy and Peter looks cuddly .
AS: B, who knows? maybe it's good for your skin!

And there you have it. I hope you got some insight into the minds of my staff. Lord help us!

*PROPOSALS THROWN BABY GIRL'S WAY ON A TYPICAL DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS NIGHT AND OVERHEARD BY YOURS TRULY:

"Can I lean over the bar RIGHT NOW and kiss you ON THE LIPS???"

"So, if my friend Joe (points to the guy next to him) and I were to ask you to come home with us tonight, which one would you pick??? And then what time can I pick you up?"

He: "I think you're cute."
She: "Wow, thanks!"
He: "I want to take you to dinner."
She: "Um.... uh-huh...."
He: "I swear! I'm not drunk at all!"
silence
He: "Gimmie your number, dammit!"
She: "Um... gotta go wash glasses!"

You can't make this stuff up.
