THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL & HABS WIN!

Last night saw the return of NFL action on a Thursday night as the San Diego Chargers hosted the Oakland Raiders.  Because the game was aired on NFL Network and the fact that our cable carrier (Time Warner) still doesn't carry the channel, we ended up with a pretty good crowd for the game.

SD SUPER CHARGER FAN gearing up for her big game vs Oakland

While the football game was going on, we also had a good number of Montreal Canadiens fans in the house to catch the Habs on the road vs Phoenix.

Among the fans supporting the Habs at the bar included acclaimed Montreal hip-hop star ANNAKIN SLAYD (pictured r. w/cap) who's a HUGE fan of my team.  He produced that cool song ("MTL Stand Up") that I would often play during Habs playoff games.  A very cool dude, down to earth and definitely knows his hockey.   He is currently supporting a new single ("Once More We Survive", w/Inspectah Deck of the WuTang Clan). You can check out the videos of both songs on his website.

I also got to meet the equipment manager of the Carolina Hurricanes.  The team's in town to play the NY Rangers tonight.  This guy was a delight to talk to, especially if you are a hockey fan like I am.  He's a "lifer", having worked with the NHL since 1967 with teams like the Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers and now the Carolina Hurricanes.  He shared some great stories and I think he's become a fan of Third and Long, which is always cool.

As for the football game, the Oakland Raiders came to play, while the San Diego Chargers... did not.  Much to the chagrin of our resident SD Chargers Fan.  I thought by the end of the game she would have a complete meltdown.  I actually asked NACHO LIBRE, my trusty barback/bodyguard to cover me just in case she was ready to go postal.  Thankfully, she was relatively okay and I didn't have to talk her down from the window ledge.

All things being said, it turned out to be a pretty good Thursday night.  Now let's see what the weekend brings!

TONIGHT: NCAA HOOPS featuring North Carolina vs Michigan State, playing each other on a ship of all places! (7pm).   NHL hockey features the NY Rangers vs Carolina, NJ Devils vs Washington, Buffalo Sabres vs Ottawa, just to name a few games.   NCAA Football game of the night:  SYRACUSE vs S. FLORIDA (8pm)

Make sure to check out our website to see what's happening this weekend at THIRD and LONG!

CRAP.

Yes, that's what I said after witnessing my beloved Cleveland Browns (better known as America's team) blow yet another lead and lose another game in the process. This time, it was to our arch-nemesis, the Denver Broncos. As usual, the Browns started out like gangbusters and got the hopes of all the fans up, until they blew it in the very end. Painful to watch. Yet I have to say, in the midst of it all, there was pretty good fan support for America's Team. And one other note: I didn't realize that we had so many cute Browns fans in NYC.

In the meantime, the bar had a pretty good turnout overall, mostly football fans, after-work happy hour holdovers and thrill-seekers. There was a lot going on in the sports world; Aside from the marquee matchup from the NFL, we also had college football, hockey, basketball... talk about sensory overload!

And who said that Browns fans didn't roll deep.....

Not a bad Thursday night overall.

Nightmare of the night: One of the ladies room toilets kept flushing and wouldn't stop. Since we have those newfangled flush-o-meters that automatically flushes by sensor, it was a royal pain in the ass to try and get the damn toilet to stop flushing. And if you know me by now, you'll realize that I'm not the one to call when it comes to mechanical issues. I usually leave that kind of stuff to FIRE MARSHALL ED, who is thrilled by shit like that.

So there I am, trying to figure out how to disconnect this sensor thingy, and every so often some female would come in and get freaked out by my presence. I have an instruction manual with pictures and foreign words all over it and I feel like I'm putting together a shelf from IKEA. I break out into a sweat, water is spitting everywhere and I'm pulling at things, jiggling this piece and that part and all of a sudden..... it stops. The toilet finally stops flushing. I wish I could tell you what the hell I did to get it to stop flushing, but whatever it was, it worked and I was glad. The bar was packed at that point and a mini-line was starting to form so thankfully it worked out when it did. Crazy shit.

FRIDAY: After-Work Happy Hour (5-10pm), featuring $4.00 Mixed Well Drinks and Draft Beers!

IT'S A SOAKER...

Rain dominated the landscape last night and into today and as a result, many folks went straight home from work. But that didn't stop the diehards from hanging out for another fun night of PUB TRIVIA. The theme for the week was BIG STUFF and the questions that came along with that topic was as wide-ranging as a topic could get. Good job by OPIE CUNNINGHAM and ALEK TREBEK on keeping the participants on their toes!

Also had an opportunity to catch up with one of my friends, a reporter for the NY Daily News. She's been covering the wars for the paper and was catching me up on some of the assignments she's been working on of late. She writes a pretty nice blog about her experiences. Check it out: "Where They Stand"

The rain should finally let up this afternoon, just in time for Happy Hour! Tonight's special is BUCKET O'LIGHTS (Buckets of Miller Lite, Michelob Light, or Coors Light, 5/$15.00) from 5-10pm.

It's also the beginning of THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, featuring NFL games every Thursday from here on out. Tonight's matchup: DENVER vs CLEVELAND. Thursday night games are only shown on the NFL NETWORK, so if you don't have it (and if you live in NYC, you don't), then check out the game here!

Don't forget, we're also home to the ESPN GAME PLAN (college football) and the NHL CENTER ICE (pro hockey)!

See you tonight!
