This is the first post of the New Year, so I want to first off, take this opportunity to wish each of you a happy and safe New Year! I'm not one for resolutions, so I won't overwhelm you with any here. If I did have to go out on a limb to make a resolution or two, I would probably say that I make a resolution to keep this blog going without boring anyone (including myself) to tears. I also make a resolution to get a new pair of sweat pants or two (as opposed to wearing my favorite pair at least once a day). I will make a resolution to... See, there I go, making resolutions. Damn it.
QUICK WEEKEND RECAP:
New Year's Eve was nothing to write home about. Don't get me wrong, the bar was pretty busy with numerous tippy patrons, anxious to ring in 2006 with their friends and loved ones. We had our fair share of knuckleheads and drunken antics, as one would expect for such an occasion. However, the vibe that one usually gets for New Year's Eve wasn't quite the same. I don't know if it was due to the fact that I was still feeling the effects of the Barf-a-thon from the night before; Or if it was the fact that the holiday didn't seem to be as "pumped up" by the media as in year's past. I can't really say. Maybe it was just me, who knows? I can honestly say that it didn't have that fuel of excitement for me that I usually get when that countdown to midnight begins. Thankfully, there were no real problems.

We did get our "D"-list celebrity sighting of the night during the New Year's Eve celebration. ALICIA CALLOWAY (Survivor 2) stopped by with a small group of friends, looking for a spot to ring in 2006. I remember first seeing her on Survivor 2 and saying to myself how much of a hottie she was and how she could whip me into shape anytime (she was the fitness instructor). She still looks good and I'd probably let her whip me into shape now.
We also got a visit from members of the LONG family, who stopped by for a brief visit, which was nice to see. They have been holding a long vigil at the hospital for their brother and my friend, MATT who's currently recovering from a tragic accident. People who were there and knew of the situation was happy to see the members of the family and shared their wishes with them. Our continued thoughts go out to them.
Sunday was New Year's Day and I woke up feeling like crap, due no doubt to lack of sleep and after effects of my "barf-a-thon" from a couple of nights ago. I actually thought about just staying in bed, but then I thought about my friend MATT and what he is going through, fighting to stay alive, let alone trying to heal from a multitude of injuries and that was enough to motivate me to pull my ass out of bed and open shop.
The day itself was actually fun, all things considered. I half-expected the day to be a dead one; with everyone being hung over from their New Year's celebration. However, I didn't factor into account the number of tourists still around and looking for a place to watch their games. So while it didn't have the flair of a normal Sunday afternoon, it was still steady enough that it kept me alert. Plus I had NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, AFRIKA BAMBATTA, T-BILL and J.B. and SILENT BOB. of the PEANUT GALLERY to keep me company. SILENT BOB was especially funny on this day as he was louder than ever, driving everyone nuts with his obnoxious comments. J.B. and SILENT BOB had a couple of friends in from CALIF. for New Year's and they were pretty nice folks. They were able to fit right into the group and could carry themselves well when it came to witty banter. Conversation topics were bawdy as usual, sex, drinking, New Year's Eve antics, etc. The topic that made me do a double-take was the one involving the proper way of wiping one's ass. You can't make this stuff up.
Yet by the end of the games, I was feeling worse than ever. I was tempted to close early just to get to the restroom (barf-a-thon, pt.II was ready to begin), but then again, I had to put things into perspective. Sure I was feeling like crap, but things could be a lot worse. I thought about MATT again and what he was going through and decided to suck it up. If he could fight through all of the pain he's dealing with, I could certainly hold on for a couple of more hours.
Overall, the weekend went pretty well. The bar stayed pretty busy, despite our beer tap woes (which will be taken care of once and for all this week, I promise); and despite my personal feelings about making resolutions, I will make one more: Don't take things for granted anymore. You never know what can happen to you today or tomorrow. Take advantage of each day to its fullest.
Some of you have asked me to repost the link for the FDNY site for the list of places where you can go to donate blood. Here you go: FDNY WEB SITE
We're pulling for you MATT.....
