A RESPITE FROM THE TEDIUM..
Today I have a day off from JURY DUTY, so it gives me an opportunity to catch up on bar-related stuff and personal errands. As I mentioned before, I got called to serve on a case and yesterday was the first day of actual testimony. While I hated the jury process up to this point (basically sitting around doing nothing but wait, wait, and wait), sitting in the jury box and actually listening to the lawyers present their case was actually pretty cool. The contrasting dynamics between the two lawyers, the witnesses and even the judge was (dare I say) riveting at times. The courtroom itself isn't the most comfortable place as it got really cold one minutes, then hot as a sauna the next. The one saving grace is that I got to sit next to a pretty hot chick and we'd banter about in between breaks while the two lawyers argued their points with the judge(this happened a lot).
I also realize that there really isn't too many options for lunch in the area surrounding the courthouse, which is a pain in the ass. You either have to walk blocks and blocks for someplace decent to eat, or you bring a lunch and sit amongst the throngs of criminals waiting around for their day in court. Very appealing indeed. There is a lot of hustle and bustle in the area though. Between the high-profile cases (such as JOHN GOTTI, JR) taking place in the Supreme Court building(next door), City Hall press conferences and movies and TV shows being filmed all over the place, there's usually a lot going on. I also notice that there is a lot of new apartment buildings popping up all over the area. While the area may be an interesting place to work, I don't know if i'd want to live there. I get the sense that the area dies out after work and it becomes very dark and desolate. Little too creepy for my tastes.
Overall, I have to say that while it ain't LAW AND ORDER, it's a pretty surreal experience thus far. The judge predicts that we should wrap our case up by Monday. We'll see what happens.
In the meantime, back at the bar, I feel like I am a bit out of the loop this week because of all the time spent at court. While working at the bar last night, I was able to briefly catch up with things from some of the regulars at the bar. I also got an opportunity to catch up with OVERNIGHTBAKER, a nice young lady whom I met at the BLOG PARTY. However, our chat was brief because I was in the middle of handling the shift change and she'd already left by the time I finished.
Tonight we have AMERICAN PSYCHO (one of our regulars) guest bartending from 6:30pm-10pm. He will be demonstrating his skills learned from hours and hours of viewing COCKTAIL (with Tom Cruise). Don't worry, he's already promised not to flip any bottles and with any luck, we won't have any broken glasses to worry about. Make sure you stop by to show your support. It promises to be an interesting evening, no matter how you slice it...

Swanfather,
For limited lunch and leg stretching options while on jury duty, try Bronx County Courthouse. It's glorious - trust me.

what's a Bronx Martini?
A BRONX Martini.... consists of Absolut Mandarin, Sweet AND Dry Vermouth, Sour Mix and OJ...shaken and served in a chilled martini glass, garnished with a cherry.
A cool refreshing drink, consistant with the theme "chill out"....
;)
Swan, there are some excellent Vietnamese places down there. Dirt cheap and great food. Get the Pho Ga. Just a block or two south of Canal on Centre street.
