AFRIKA BAMBATTA, ANGRY BLACK and MR LOW-KEY chillin' out early on.

Yesterday was a special day for me as it was my last Sunday before my annual summer hiatus. With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, thus signaling the "unofficial" opening of summer, the bar traditionally closes on Sundays during the summer months. Which means an extra weekend day for yours truly. By now I am looking forward to the break because after a long "year" of football, March Madness and other assorted events, you need some time to recharge the batteries.

It was a beautiful afternoon and with that, tons of eye candy filled the streets, which is always nice when you have a "fishbowl" like we have at the bar. A few of the regulars stopped in and out throughout the day to have a quick beer or two and to say goodbye for the summer break, which was nice to see. There were also a couple of "quasi-regulars" who proved to be entertaining for us as well.

One couple in particular were really a piece of work. It turns out they live in the same building as the recent murder victim from the neighborhood I spoke about a couple of days ago. In any case, she was definitely entertaining. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, was the total opposite; laid back... I mean L-A-I-D baaaaaaccck! A cool couple but an interesting one. More on them in a moment.

Towards the end of the afternoon, STIFFLER and CUSACK were hanging out with me and we're talking shop when I noticed this rather small woman standing outside the bar. So I asked the question "How small does one person has to be to be considered a "little person"? We began to debate over how small she actually was when I told STIFFLER to go outside and stand next to the woman while I got a picture of the both of them, to illustrate how small she was.

As I began to take a picture of the two, I (and other bar patrons) began to notice that the traffic on the street was piling up for some strange reason. And across the street, there was this silver-haired old lady standing in the middle of the intersection, waving her arms frantically. My first instinct told me that maybe someone got hit by a car.

It turns out that there was a jeep that ran out of gas on East 35th Street, right up the block from the bar. To make matters worse, a city bus broke down behind it. So the cars that were behind it trying to pass began to reverse gears and back up onto 3rd Avenue. Meanwhile, you still have cars trying to make its way up 35th Street from the other side of the intersection; coupled with the main traffic going up 3rd Ave and we had a clusterf*** in the making. This poor woman decided to take matters into her own hands and try to play traffic cop. Lucky for her, she was wearing an obnoxiously loud pink blazer so the drivers could at least see her.

That couple I spoke about earlier? The girlfriend decides to run out and help the poor old woman and the two ended up working together as a team after briefly getting into an argument (I believe the old lady told the girl something to the effect of: "If you aren't here to help out, get the f*** out of the way!" ) At least she's feisty. This went on for what seemed to be forever. But finally the police came and took over the situation (after the old lady pulled the cop out of his car). Funny stuff.

Eventually the couple got into an argument because I think the boyfriend got jealous of the girl giving her attention to other guys. They got into a shouting match in the bar and they both stormed out. Interestingly enough, after I closed the bar, I was walking home when I heard running footsteps behind me (this was around 1am). I turn around and there's the boyfriend running down the street, yelling and screaming; his girlfriend is running after him, yelling as well. Very bizarre and it definitely scared the crap out of me.


I got a late-night visit from NURSE BETTY, whom I hadn't seen in quite awhile. It's always good to see her as she's not only great on the eyes, but fun to talk to. An outgoing personality and a sexy southern accent to boot.

Just want to say thanks again to all those who stopped by yesterday to share their well-wishes and to everyone who supported Fantasy Football Sunday all year long. Your continued loyalty means a lot to me and it is indeed appreciated. I hope you enjoy your summer weekends and look forward to NFL Sundays in September!
