THE END OF THE ROAD

A staff meeting was called for last night, and it was there that we got the news: After 16 1/2 years, THIRD and LONG will be closing its doors at the end of the month.

Now there had been speculation over the past few months that this was a possibility. The bar had been in negotiations with the landlord to renew the lease and after months and months of haggling back and forth, it looked like things were going to work out. As negotiations continued, it became apparent that the landlord's demands, at the end of the day, didn't make business sense for the bar to continue.

So as a result, unless there is an "eleventh-hour" compromise (or reprieve), the bar will close its doors when its current lease ends at the end of the month.

What happens now? Well, as I mentioned before, unless there's a deal made between now and the end of the month, we begin to say goodbye to all of our loyal patrons both past and present; and we party like it was 1999. What does the future hold for the bar? That is still to be determined. I will keep everyone updated between now and our last day.

In the meantime, I'm sure we will stage a series of "goodbye" events over the course of the next few weeks so that we can properly say our farewells because let's face it: We've made a lot a friends over the years. People have made friends here. Some have met their future mates here. There are even new families walking around because of a chance meeting here. So I'm sure the DON and the Staff will want to make those last connections before we "pour that last beer".

So that's the scoop. Sad but true. I'm still in a bit of a fog over the whole thing but I'll sort things out over time. We all will, I'm sure.

More details to follow. Thanks for listening and thanks for your support.

You and I will meet again
When we're least expecting it
One day in some far off place
I will recognize your face
I won't say goodbye my friend
For you and I will meet again

I'm in shock, you are closing? You can't close I still haven't made my trip to NYC and get to have one of those $4.00 beers. For someplace I have never been I'm sadden by this turn of events. What will become of the blog? The Sunday Brew Crew? What will I read during work?

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move.
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours,
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines,
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want.
Sorry, my dear.
But where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns.
Don't bother, they're here.

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer,
Losing my timing this late
In my career?
And where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns.
Well, maybe next year.
