CONDOLENCES TO THE FDNY FAMILY

As FDNY members Joseph Graffagnino and Robert Beddia were laid to rest after the tragic accident at the Deutsche Bank building, we here at Third and Long want to send our condolences and heartfelt prayers to the families and fellow members of the FDNY.

On a personal note, the fact that this accident even happened in the first place makes no sense to me simply because, for the life of me I don't understand why this building was still standing in the first place. It's been empty since 9/11; It should have been torn down a long time ago. But for various reasons, whether it be political, or health concerns due to asbestos or community-related issues, this eyesore has remained standing for almost six years. And now to read that TWO MORE firemen got hurt again yesterday only tells me that that site is cursed. GET RID OF IT ALREADY! Before someone else gets hurt, or God forbid, loses a life.

As for the funerals that are taking place, the turnout of firemen from all over the country and various parts of the world is simply overwhelming. I've always been impressed with the solidarity that firemen have with each other, especially in bad times and emergencies. If a catastrophic event took place, say in Oklahoma, you can be sure that firefighters from all over the country will fly in to lend a helping hand. And if a catastrophic event leads to a death of a fallen comrade, the funeral for those fallen comrades will be attended by firefighters from near and far, to show support for the family of their fallen brother. I've always been humbled and impressed by that. You don't see that often.

So again, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Graffagnino and Beddia families on the loss of their fallen heroes. They served their city well and they won't be forgotten.

well said, C. my first job out of college was at 130 Liberty and so i was nearby on 9/11 and have been following the sad saga of the "Black Widow" as the building is called. i agree with you 100% that that building should've been torn down long ago. it's sad to lose two of the Bravest this way.
