Another "Gem" from SHOWTIME

During my stint in the "sick-bay", I found myself watching a lot of TV. During this time I came across this little gem of a TV series on SHOWTIME, called BROTHERHOOD. A gritty drama involving politics, organized crime and the moral dilemma of family loyalty, the setting of this show takes place in present-day Providence, Rhode Island. The main focus of the show revolves around the Caffee family, a tight-knit Irish family led by its no-nonsense matriarch, Rose Caffee, who protects her family and controls them with an iron fist. Within the family (and the basis for much of the dramatic storylines) are two brothers, Tommy, a local politician with high aspirations and Michael, the black sheep of the family with ties to organized crime who reappears onto the family landscape after disappearing for seven years. His unexpected return turns the family (and the neighborhood) upside down and the show gets much of its energy from that.

The show is smartly written, the cast is excellent (especially the supporting cast) and after watching the first two episodes (11 episodes in Season 1), I found that I couldn't get enough and ended up devouring the whole season in three days. Season 1 is currently airing on Showtime-On-Demand, with Season 2 premiering on September 30th. While it isn't quite on par with HBO's "The Wire" or "The Sopranos", it's definitely worth a view. I give it 3 1/2 beer mugs (out of four).

Check it out.
