WEEKEND WRAP-UP
Sorry for the late post; It was a long night (as well as a long weekend) for yours truly. Good times was had by most people that I came across during the course of the weekend (myself included).
On Saturday, OHIO STATE continued its improbable run towards a national championship by defeating WISCONSIN; while I wasn't able to come down to check out the game with my fellow supporters (simply exhausted from the night before), I was glad to see the results. Two more games (ILLINOIS and the dreaded MICHIGAN) and they will finish undefeated. Keeping the fingers crossed.
I did managed to get up in time to check out the RANGERS/DEVILS game at Madison Square Garden, as a guest of my good friend, SY SPERLING (also known as the Gangsta Pimp at the Halloween Party, or SUGAR as he prefers to be known as). Now I've been to my share of Ranger hockey games in the past, but I can honestly say I've never had seats such as the ones we had on Saturday (okay, I did get to sit against the glass once many years ago, but to be quite honest, I really didn't enjoy it as much- especially when Mario Lemieux got checked against the boards right in front of me, causing my beer to go flying into my face).
The seats we had were five rows from the ice, with a view just above the glass. In my opinion, they were about as perfect as you can get for a hockey game: You have the perfect view of the whole ice, the players are literally in your face; and best of all, you really get to appreciate the speed, skill and beauty of the sport from that vantage point. I guess that's also the reason why the tickets are so expensive at that level (nearly $200. each).
A few things we got to appreciate while sitting there: (1) A great fight at center ice between two goons.....
Talk about vantage point....And then (2) for the "File under WTF":

The "Chooch" sitting across from me who decides that a hockey game is the perfect place to eat SUSHI! Are you kidding me? Who in the heck eats sushi at a hockey game (well, aside from maybe our Brew Crew friend, SUSHI SAMBA)? That's enough to get a beatdown, had he been in the cheap seats. That's just wrong.
Overall, it was a great game, great seats and again, my hats off to SY SPERLING (I mean, SUGAR) for the awesome time!
Getting back to the bar after the game, I walked into a birthday party for a couple of Staten Island girls. The bar was starting to fill up at the time and I could tell it was going to be one of those nights. Open bar, large group of party animals, lot of cigarette smokers outside- you know the routine. I decided that since the clocks were going back one hour, I'd take advantage of the extra hour and turn it into sleep time.
Sunday afternoon started out slowly; Many people went to check out the NY Marathon and the multiple viewing parties that come with them. I expected a later hit and had bartenders coming in to relieve me so that I could oversee our own Post-Race Marathon Party. As expected, the crowds came later in the afternoon and between the Marathon Party, the Pats-Colts game and curiosity-seekers, the bar was filled in no time.
We had a lot of FDNY as well as firemen from all over the world stopping by after the race. Our own RUNNING MAN won a trophy for being the #1 finisher among FDNY runners (and the Eddie Coyle Trophy). Nice job by him!
The evening turned into a whirlwind of dancing, drinking and jokes. One person that stood out for me was our own BLONDE CHATTERBOX, who came in from a full day of Marathon parties, lit like a Christmas tree. Bless her heart, she was so wasted that at one point, there was a couple standing off by themselves, enjoying pizza. BLONDE CHATTERBOX, strolls by, takes a slice of pizza and begins eating it, much to the dismay of the couple, myself, AFRIKA BAMBATTA, REDSKINS GIRL and a host of witnesses. Once AFRIKA asked her about what she did, she immediately tried to give back the half-eaten slice (the couple refused). Bless her heart. You can't make this stuff up.
All told, it was a pretty good night.
TONIGHT: Dollar Draft Madness ($1.00 Bud/Bud Light/Coors Light MUGS all night long!); NY RANGERS vs PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (7pm), NJ DEVILS vs PITTSBURGH PENS (7pm) and PITTSBURGH vs BALTIMORE (NFL-8:30pm).
Thanks for reading and apologies again for the late post.
