If you haven't noticed lately, there seems to be a disturbing trend taking place in Murray Hill; It seems that on every corner these days there's a new bank popping up. Whether it be CHASE, BANK of AMERICA, SOVEREIGN, COMMERCE or WASHINGTON MUTUAL, it seems that conventional thinking dictates that there's not enough banks for everyone. By my calculations, it seems that there's enough banks so that each person has their own personal ATM. WTF?
Along the same vein, there seems to be an outburst of drug stores popping up all over the place. DUANE READE started the expansion movement sometime last year when they quietly began to open up stores on what seemed to be every other block. Now there's the competition trying to move in with the opening of a 24- hour CVS Superstore on the corner of East 42nd and 3rd Avenue, and a soon-to-be-open Walgreen's Mart and Drug Store on East 36th Street. What's up with that? Do we really need all of these drug stores? C'mon.
Out of curiosity, I took a stroll up to the new CVS after work to see what the big scoop was. It was about 2:30 am and I was expecting to see an empty, quiet store. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see the place brightly lit and painted, and more importantly, bustling with activity. It's a pretty large store and has an impressive stock and variety of items. The employees were very friendly and helpful (unlike DUANE READE, who tend to employ grumps). Prices were similar to D-R for the most part; Overall, the only thing DUANE READE has over the new CVS (at the moment) is the convenience of being only a half block away (for me anyways). However, they often don't have things that I'm looking for so maybe it will be worth the short walk to be able to have the things that I need.In any case, I still gotta ask: When will the madness end? Do we really need a drug store or bank on every block? Building owners obviously don't mind having them because they mean guaranteed rental income. But I can't help but to wonder if these businesses will run each other OUT of business due to too much supply and not enough demand? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Enough of that rant. What say you?
