Local Cullinary Delights

I've had ongoing debates with some of the regulars about some of the restaurants in the area. We've argued over who has the best pizza, where to get great bagels, coffee, roast chicken, etc. Of course, everyone thinks their choice is the right choice. However, when push comes to shove, I like to think I'm a pretty good judge of what's really good and what isn't in this neighborhood.

For example, there's this new rotisserie chicken spot that just opened up on East 34th Street (between 3rd and 2nd) called PIO PIO. Normally I don't go for rotisserie anything, let alone chicken; However, after much encouragement and numerous recommendations from local patrons, I finally decided to give it a try. I can only come up with one word that best describes the food in this place: PHENOMENAL!

The menu in this place is pretty basic and simple. Various appetizers like tamales, fried calamari, and cerviche limeno gets the juices flowing, while at the same time setting yourself up for the main event: Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken.

As I mentioned before, normally I'm not a big fan of rotisserie chicken, but I have to say that this place serves the best chicken I've ever tasted, Rotisserie, Fried, Baked, whatever. The chicken is always moist and falls off the bone easily; It melts in your mouth like butter. The spices used on the chicken is something I've never experienced before but it makes the chicken. Puts it right over the top. And the green dipping sauce that accompanies the chicken is an added bonus!

I guess you can tell I like the place. Try it for yourself. The one drawback with this place is that its really, really small. Intimate if you will. So if you are looking to go with a large group, good luck, it's going to be a tight fit. Great for a date, however, if you need a low-key date spot with great food. Oh and go for the sangria. You won't regret it. You might not feel your face in the morning, but you deal with that when the time comes. PIO PIO.

More neighborhood gems to com.
