Monday was Cinco de Mayo, the day to celebrate everything Mexican. And of course, to celebrate THAT DAY BARTENDER'S birthday (again). I swear, this guy celebrates a birthday like it was a world tour!
Last night the bar was hopping with folks eager to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. This was pretty interesting in light of the fact that we didn't have anything planned for Cinco de Mayo. In fact, each year I wonder why we even celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the first place. It isn't an American holiday; As a matter of fact, it isn't even a celebration of Mexico's Independence (which is the common belief). Cinco de Mayo reportedly is a day that is remembered for Mexico's defeat of the French Army when it tried to invade Mexico in 1862. To be quite honest with you, I'm not all that interested in talking about it, but as a public service to the dedicated readers of the blog, if you really want to learn more about it, click HERE
As I mentioned before, the bar was pretty busy most of the night; We got a visit from the happy Rugby Boys from Australia; There isn't a dollar beer special that they didn't like. They are usually a happy-go-lucky bunch of guys who live for the moment; They dance, they sing, they obviously drink... and unfortunately, sometimes they smell. I don't know if it's one of those "Euro-trash" things to go without deodorant, but damn. And to make it worse, to mask the "phunk" with tons of cologne.... egads!
On another note- there were quite a few cuties hanging out throughout the night. One in particular really caught my eye. She was near the end of the bar, talking with a couple of guys. I looked at her and found myself double-take; At first glance, she looked like Meadow Soprano (Jamie-Lynn Siegler). I asked the bar staff their opinion and they agreed that she did look a lot like her, but insisted that she wasn't who I was thinking of. Apparently she hangs out at the bar often, usually on Monday nights. Hmmm..... She's a cutie nevertheless.
We got another visit from MADAME X, who stopped by for a quickie. I think the crowd got to her, as she usually doesn't handle large crowds well.
All told, it was a pretty good Monday night- not a bad way to start the week.
RECOMMENDED DVD OF THE WEEK: Eagle vs Shark. A quirky love comedy from New Zealand (featuring Jermaine Clement of "Flight of the Conchords") that won numerous film festival awards around the country, I'd been wanting to see it ever since it hit movie screens here in New York. Alas, I missed my window of opportunity due to a busy schedule. But now it's available On Demand (Time-Warner) or on DVD. If you like dry humor and quirky, light-hearted comedies (think The Royal Tennenbaums or Rushmore with a kiwi accent), then you'll LOVE this film. Check it out for yourself.
DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS continues tonight with $1.00 Bud/Bud Light mugs ALL NIGHT LONG!
NHL PLAYOFFS resume this Thursday with Detroit vs Dallas in the Western Conference final, while Pittsburgh face Philadelphia in the battle of Pennsylvania and the Eastern Conference final starting on Friday. We want to thank all of the hockey fans of all the teams who came out in droves to catch their teams in action during the playoffs. We hope that we made it worth your while. In the meantime, we will continue to carry ALL NHL playoff games here, great drink specials included.
ONE LAST NOTE: I want to thank the staff of YELLOW HOOK GRILLE in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn for a fine job they did in taking care of us on "Staff Night Out" this past Saturday. A large reason for the night's success was due in part to their great service and attention to detail in making us feel comfortable. I'm sure the rest of my staff will agree, the food was great, the atmosphere was awesome and I would recommend it to anyone who will listen. And that says a lot coming from me, considering how much I hate traveling to Brooklyn (as anyone who knows me will attest).
Nuff Said
