WHOA.
This is going to be a short post because of time constraints and because quite frankly, there isn't much to say regarding last night's results. The packed bar was a witness to a disastrous night of hockey where both of the local teams were unceremoniously bounced from the playoffs.
The nightmare began with the NY Rangers. After leading the 2nd seeded Washington Capitals three games to one and needing just one more victory to pull off an upset and move into the next round, all of a sudden found themselves with their backs against the wall and playing in a Game 7 matchup on the road. To make matters worse, they actually scored the first goal in Game 7 and had the Capitals scrambling, only to give up a tying goal and giving the Caps new life.
This game was nip and tuck all the way and there were signs that the Blueshirts could actually pull out a victory. Then with less than five minutes left in the game, the Blueshirts gave up a beautiful goal by an aging Seregi Federov and that was that. Their season was over, the first time in team history that they had a 3-1 series lead only to lose the series. Sickening.
While this was taking place, across the river the NJ Devils were seemingly on their way to dispatching the Carolina Hurricanes. Leading 3-2 with only minutes left, the Devils allowed the Hurricanes to score two goals within a 48 second span to win the game and the series, 4-3. Shocking. Talk about deflating a crowd. So just like that, both local teams are out of the playoffs, licking their wounds and playing golf. The NHL Conference semi-finals are as follows:
BOSTON vs CAROLINA
PITTSBURGH vs WASHINGTON
DETROIT vs ANAHEIM
PITTSBURGH vs WASHINGTON
DETROIT vs ANAHEIM
VANCOUVER vs CHICAGO
All pretty good matchups, especially Pittsburgh vs Washington where the NHL's premier golden boys (Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin) will face off against one another. They must be pretty with that. Second round begins tomorrow night.
