WEEKEND RECAP (long post)

The past weekend started out on a low-key note but finished off on a high note with a flurry of activity and fun times. The arctic blast we experienced on Thursday and Friday took its toll on all of the nightlife in the neighborhood as no one was in the mood to venture out in the brisk cold weather. Thankfully the Christmas shopping season is upon us as the tourists were out en masse to pick up the slack, so we were at least able to salvage the night.

Saturday brought out legions of amateur Santas as SANTACON took center stage during the day.

The day-long bar crawl brought about plenty of drunken revelers decked out in various states of St. Nick wear and there were plenty of laughs to be had. There was one group of SANTACON participants in particular that stood out, but not for the right reasons. They were definitely from out-of-town, decked with southern accents. Clearly had more than a few and were being generally annoying, though they probably didn't realize it. One girl in particular kept coming up to the bar and requesting a DJ to play songs that she wanted to hear. SULLY T, the bartender at the time, had just finished his shift and was in the process of retrieving his IPOD when the tipsy twit started harassing him for songs. After about five minutes of begging for music, her screechy voice finally got to me and I made a comment to her that effectively stopped her in her tracks and she walked away grumbling. (I told her that her voice could kill cancer. Yeah, kinda harsh looking back on it now, but it was pretty annoying at the time).

Later on in the evening we hosted a birthday party for one of the newer members of the SUNDAY BREW CREW. SEAN JEAN, who can normally be found where the CORNER BOYS reside, celebrated his birthday with a group of his closest friends. They enjoyed a night of UFC action as we hosted the PPV event featuring B.J. Penn defending his title against Diego Sanchez in a lopsided affair.

The turnout was pretty good as we tend to do well with the UFC events. The fights themselves were also very entertaining, though I gotta be honest; I'm not sure if I could handle watching one of these events live. These guys take a lot of punishment and there were a couple of guys (Diego Sanchez in particular) who got cut up pretty bad. Definitely not for the squeamish, but the fans love this stuff.

I met these guys during the course of the night; they traveled down from Montreal, Quebec for the weekend and found our bar on Google after looking for a place to watch the Canadiens and UFC; I think we now have two new international fans of Third and Long!

A long night but a pretty good one overall.

SUNDAY afternoon was a cold and rainy one and I was actually worried that we would have a small turnout because there we're reports that we may actually get some snow. However, that didn't stop the Sunday Brew Crew, nor the fans of the Miami Dolphins, who came out in full force to see their team play the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Some highlights of the day:

-I think the swelling numbers of Dolphins fans may have gotten to AFRIKA BAMBATTA, especially when he stepped away to speak to someone only to come back to his usual spot at the bar and find his beloved bar stool missing. He went ballistic! While it is annoying to have someone take your seat at a bar, it was very difficult to keep a straight face as his expression was priceless.Bold

-Speaking of the DOLFANS, they are riding on a high as their team continues to strive for a playoff spot. Say what you will about the fans themselves, you can't question their loyalty, that's for sure. And the passion I've seen from this group is something I haven't seen since the old days when Steeler Nation used to run things here. And even then, they didn't match the number of hardcore supporters that the DOLFANS roll with on a week-to-week basis. You gotta give credit where credit is due.

-We got a return visit from THE HAT BOYS. For those of you who don't remember, they were the group of guys who were involved in the infamous pier-six brawl we had here a few years back. (They've apologized for that incident several times and fences have since been mended) They were on their annual Bar Crawl and decided to stop by for old times sake. No craziness this time, just hanging out and having a few cold ones. I still find myself chuckling when I look back at that crazy night.

-We discovered a new way to piss away our hard earned money, thanks to three little pigs. On my most recent trip to Montreal, I came across this bar game called TEQUILA PIGS. A simple game, really, but one that is supposed to promote fun drinking (or in this case, games of chance). When I initially picked up the game, I didn't quite get the gist of the game. It had been sitting on my desk, collecting dust when I spotted it and decided to bring it with me to work. I gave it to SEXY LEXY and J.C. and asked them to figure it out. Apparently the object of the game is to roll the pigs and you earn points based on how they land. Whomever earns the most points has to take a drink.

Later in the evening, I took a look at the game and decided to modify things a bit and instead of having the winner take a drink, I had the winner take the "pot" (cash is king here). Next thing you know, myself, OPIE CUNNINGHAM, MR. LOW-KEY, SILENT BOB, JON CUSACK and NATE THE GREAT found ourselves playing for hours. Very addicting.

All told, a pretty good weekend.

After working six nights in a row, looking forward to the next few nights off. Check our website for some cool promos coming up in the next few days. And I am also looking forward to next Sunday as I expect nothing less than total debauchery!

TONIGHT: MONDAY NIGHT MUG NIGHT featuring Monday Night Football (Arizona vs San Francisco, 8pm), and $1 Bud/Bud Light/Coors Light mugs (or for you high rollers, $2 mugs, all other domestic drafts)!

That's It. That's All I Got.

I doubt you've received my packet of six "games of chance" yet - those were special ones, you'll love 'em - but there's a larger shipment on the way.
