Boys and girls, it's that time of year again! The Ringling Bros. Circus is back in town and that means one thing: THE ELEPHANTS ARE COMING!
With that, our time-honored tradition continues: The Elephant Parade party! This night is always a hoot because it is such a unique event. Picture this scenario:
Bands of happy revelers convene at the bar for some pre-gaming fun, complete with dollar mugs of Bud Light to get you into the mood. While this is happening, a crowd begins to gather outside the entrance of the Midtown Tunnel at around midnight, anticipating the marching of the elephants. You find the strangest gathering of folks around this time, from parents with kids in tow, to buzz-happy patrons from the bar, to curious tourists wondering what the hell is going on, and of course, the PETA-protesters, with signs in tow. All milling about, waiting for the festivities to begin.
Then at the first sign of the parade's start, I give the signal and BOOM! Like a bat out of hell, everyone rushes out of the bar and make their way towards the Tunnel exit just as the Ringmaster leads the parade of elephants out of the tunnel and onto East 34th street. What happens next is something from a scene from a Godzilla movie. Mass pandemonium takes place. Everyone begins sprinting up the block and onto 3rd Avenue, hoping to catch another glimpse of the fast-moving parade of elephants before they pass by again. It's sheer nuts and hilarious to watch.
It's a sight to behold and a definite must-do, at least once in your life. Scenes from last year's ELEPHANT PARADE PARTY:
Fun begins tonight at 7pm. Elephants scheduled to arrive at midnight! Bring a camera. You're going to want to take pics, trust me!
That's It. That's All I Got.
