WINTER WEEKEND ROUNDUP.. (long post)

The past weekend was just about what I expected for a post-holiday weekend. Having celebrated New Year's the weekend before, I was prepared for the usual "holiday hangover" that comes following a big holiday. And this past week was no exception to that rule.

What I wasn't prepared for, however, was the mass exodus of people leaving the city early due to the much-hyped snowstorm that was predicted for Friday. Unlike the major snowstorm that took place after Christmas, this one was pretty tame. But because of the media hype that went into this storm, the streets were pretty empty on Friday night. Which of course, made for a pretty uneventful night for us.

Things picked up a bit on Saturday, thanks in part to the start of the NFL Playoffs. The first game featured New Orleans vs Seattle. There wasn't much interest in this game as everyone expected New Orleans to dismantle Seattle (myself included). This was a team that backed into the playoffs with a 7-9 record, with many people thinking the Seahawks didn't deserve to be in the playoffs in the first place.

However, this turned out to be a barn-burner of a shootout. An entertaining game with a shocking finish: Seattle defeated New Orleans 41-36 in a very enjoyable game. First prediction down the drain.

Second game featured the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts. The bar filled up quickly for this game and as expected, the Jet fans came out of the woodwork for this game.

The game was close to the vest as expected except that this time around the New York Jets were able to pull out a last-second victory , much to the delight of the capacity crowd in the house.

On a side note, there was a drunken Giants fan who thought it would be funny to throw some "haterade" on the victory celebration by the Jets fans in the bar.  Let's just say that his antics didn't go over too well with the Jet fans in the bar and they let their feelings on the matter be known.  I think it's safe to say that this moron won't be diving into any Jet celebrations anytime soon.  File under "Idiot".

BREW CREW SUNDAY was pretty laid back as the marquee game of the day (Philadelphia vs Green Bay) wasn't scheduled until 4pm.  The Sunday Brew Crew made their way in for the first game along with a few Baltimore Ravens fans and they settled in to what turned out to be a snore of a game.  The Ravens pretty much had their way with the Chiefs and once that was established, the Brew Crew turned their attention from that game to more important matters, bar games and beers.  By the way, the Colts/Browns/Ravens defeated the Chiefs, 30-7.  The only game I predicted correctly all weekend.

The bar filled up a bit more for the second game, with the majority of the fans in the bar being diehard Eagles fans.  They had a sense of cockiness about them as they were sure that their "Chosen One", Michael Vick would lead them to victory.  Unfortunately for them, the Green Bay Packers seemed to have Vick figured out as they kept him and the Eagles out of sync and earning a 21-16 victory in the process.  I hate to be Michael Vick in the City of Brotherly Love today.

In cleaning out our basement, I came across these old NBA placards, one for every team in the league. They were sent to the bar from 'TBS TV, back in 1994. Based on the way they look, I'm assuming they were used for the 1994 NBA Draft. So I showed them to the Brew Crew and we picked out our favorite teams and took a group picture with them. It was pretty cool to see some of the now-throwback logos of some of the teams.

Towards the end of the night, these two lovely young ladies came into the bar, hoping to hang out with other sports fans. Unfortunately for them, the game had just ended and the place cleared out, leaving just them and some other random guy at the bar. As it turns out, Janet and Michelle had been on their own personal "bar crawl", hitting such random spots along 34th Street like Macy's Cellar Bar, The Barking Dog, some random Turkish Bakery and Bar XII, just to name a few. An interesting mix of bars, that's for sure. They turned out to be pretty nice and one of the girls, Michelle, is a fellow blogger, which is always nice to see.

The evening was pretty mellow up until the halfway through the Knicks/Lakers game when these two rather hot females came into the bar. They sat at the bar and ordered a couple of beers and began having their "girl talk".  I get a lot of this on late Sunday nights.  It's usually small groups of girls, or couples canoodling in the back.  Always the same thing.

These girls were interesting in that I overheard their conversation turn to pornography.  Of course my ears perked up for this.  It's not very often you come across hot chicks talking about porn.  As it turned out, one of the girls was having an issue with porn and her boyfriend because she thought that a guy looking at porn was the same as cheating.  Her friend, slightly older but just as hot, was trying to explain to her how guys in a general sense, are visual creatures, which attracts them to pornography.  Guys like it, ladies don't but they tolerate it, blah blah blah... It was eventual that I would get drawn into the conversation and of course, I happily put in my two cents on the matter.

By the time all was said and done, the whole bar (maybe six people at this point) were involved in the conversation.  It got spirited at times, but pretty funny overall.

Not a bad way to finish a Sunday night.

BCS Championship tonight (AUBURN vs OREGON), 8pm!  $1 Bud/Bud Light mugs OR $2 mugs, all other domestic drafts (5pm-close)!

Cheers!
