FINALLY GETS IT RIGHT...

After a playoff season where I couldn't pick my nose right, let alone pick a winner, I finally bagged the right team in The Big Game... much to the chagrin of the fans of Steeler Nation.

Before I get into the highlights of Super Bowl Sunday, I feel the need to recap the rest of the weekend (or at least what I could remember)...

FRIDAY: Friday night was a night for birthday parties as there were AT LEAST four different birthday gatherings taking place during the course of the night. There were some eventful moments throughout the night, particularly some involving a couple of visiting Aussies entertaining the crowd with their dual make-out sessions with a couple of lucky American girls.  The Aussie boys ended up coming back every night of the weekend; even won a couple of shekels on a random Super Bowl friendly while trying to figure out the game.  Go figure.

SATURDAY was a miserable day for me, a great night for the bar.  T-BILL hooked me up with some Korean BBQ chicken tacos on Friday from a foodie truck and I paid the price on Saturday as spent the bulk of the day running in and out of the "Executive Office".  Brutal.  Meanwhile, we had a great turnout for UFC 126: SILVA vs BELFORT.  A rousing crowd were into the matches and most were pretty impressed by Anderson Silva's effort.

SUNDAY was of course, Super Bowl Sunday and there was a lot of anticipation in the air.  Who would win the big game?  On Friday, I predicted that Green Bay would win the game, 34-31.  I made my prediction based on a gut feeling, which up to now, meant more for the team I picked against.  I only picked two games right during the whole playoffs and by picking Green Bay, it made Pittsburgh fans feel confident in the fact that this would mean a certain victory for them.  But as things turned out, it wasn't meant to be...

Somebody's gotta lose this close game...

Dejected Steeler fans wondering what should have been...

There were a lot of twists and turns to the game and everyone definitely found themselves into it. And the fact that it came down to the last drive made the game that much better.  Most Super Bowls usually end up as a blow out, but in this case, the game kept everyone's interest throughout the game and that's what you want.  At the end, the Green Bay Packers held off a last-drive charge by the Pittsburgh Steelers to win their fourth Super Bowl, making me look good in the process.

Most bizarre moment of the day?  We got a visit early in the day from this random old fella.  He was sporting a toupee and a quasi-handlebar mustache and these green pants with what looked like a diaper sticking out.  Definitely unique.  He waltzed up to the bar and ordered a whiskey and soda and kept to himself.  We were marveling over his mustache and his eccentric vibe.  After he finished his drink, he shuffled off and said to me as he was walking out the door: "Next time I come here, you better have a red carpet ready for me!".  Alrighty.

It gets better.  He ends up walking down the street and going into another bar.  No big deal.  Meanwhile while we're all back inside chatting up out thoughts for the big game, we spot him walking back up the block and past the bar.  We watch him as he waits by the corner and when the stoplight change, he walks into the street and into a cab parked in front of the bar.  Problem was, he got into the driver's side of the cab.  The guy was a cab driver!

Now we're all standing around in amazement at what we just saw.  This dude's going from bar to bar knocking back drinks and getting ready to drive a cab?  Not good.  At the same time, these two girls walk up to the cab to get in and we ended up flagging them away from the car.  We gave them the heads up on the guy and they were very appreciative of it.  We also called 311 to give them the heads up on the situation but before anyone could come to deal with the cab driver, he drove off and the way he pulled out, it was lucky that did keep the girls from getting into that car.  Bizarre.

Aside from that, it was a fun day and a great way to cap off a fun football season.  Now that the Super Bowl is over, reality is setting in that there will be no more BREW CREW SUNDAYS for another seven months.  Ugh.  While it is always a sad time for me, I want to thank everyone who helped make this season the most successful one yet; from the great staff who toiled behind the stick every Sunday, to the great people who came in week in, week out to enjoy a great afternoon of NFL fun;  Thanks to the DOLFANS NYC Club for making Third and Long their home and to the Brew Crew regulars, many who've been coming back year after year.  You guys are what makes Sundays at 3 & L great.  See you next season!

TONIGHT: "MUG NIGHT MONDAYS" start off the week with $2 domestic draft mugs or $1 Bud/Bud Light mugs (5pm-close)!  Catch the opening night of the BEANPOT TOURNAMENT (Northeastern vs Harvard, 5pm followed by Boston College vs Boston University).

Super Bowl XLV at Third and Long NYC

And the countdown begins! Who's going to win "The Big Game"? Well, if you've been living or dying by my predictions during this year's playoffs, you're probably in the poorhouse by now. However, since there's only one game left, I have a 50% chance of being right. So that being said, I think the winner of this year's Super Bowl will be.......

Green Bay 34 Pittsburgh 31
. Don't ask why. Just a gut feeling (and we're talking a big gut here). Take my predictions any way you want. Hopefully for once, I'll look like a genius!

Big sports weekend all around.   Aside from the main event of the weekend (Super Bowl XLV), we also have on tap the start of the Six Nations Rugby Tournament on Saturday.  This is a yearly tournament featuring National Teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. A popular event, BBC America will be carrying selected matches throughout the tournament and we'll carry their feed here.  This Saturday:'s match: FRANCE vs SCOTLAND (11:30am, Saturday)

We also have on tap (as if you didn't know by now), UFC 126: SILVA vs BELFORT (10pm Saturday night).  A pretty stacked card on tap, it should be a good night for UFC fans!  ($10 cover charge).

And if that wasn't enough to whet the appetite, this coming Monday night is the start of the Beanpot Hockey Tournament, featuring hockey teams from Boston University, Boston College, Harvard and Northeastern University.  We'll be carrying the BC vs BU match live (7pm).

So as you can see, we're gearing up for a busy weekend at the bar.  Looking forward to a fun-filled weekend, hopefully one with lots of good stories to report!   Stay tuned...

Cheers!

WHAT? ANOTHER SNOWSTORM? "SNO-DICE"!

While the rest of the country found themselves at the mercy of "Mama Nature" in what was billed as "The Mother of all Snowstorms", it looks as if we got spared for a change.  Sure we did get pummeled overnight with a lot of freezing rain, causing multiple accidents and sidewalk slips (trust me, I know), but compared to what the rest of the country was going through, we got off easy.

This reprieve makes life that much easier for everyone as they can now go about their business without having to hunker down for days at a time, waiting for the snow to end.  As a matter of fact, it actually feels rather balmy outside as we speak (or as balmy as one could hope for in February).

SUPER BOWL WEEK is kicking into high gear, with Media Day taking place yesterday.  And to be honest, I didn't really give a rats ass.  How many times can you hear soundbites about how so-and-so got to the Super Bowl and how many times a player thanks God and their mama for everything they achieved?  It gets rather mundane after awhile.  And if I see another player filming the interviewer with his little mini-cam, I'm going to scream.  That was so... 1991.

I think the reason why I haven't fully gotten into the Super Bowl hype yet (and I'm sure many of you will agree) is that two weeks between the Championship Games and the Super Bowl is too long.  A momentum killer both for the hype of the game and very often, for the game itself.  The mere fact that we have two really good and entertaining teams in the Super Bowl (Green Bay/ Pittsburgh) and I can't muster up any excitement yet says it all.  I really wish the NFL would go back to holding the "Big Game" the weekend after the Championship games.  Just makes more sense.  I'm just sayin'.

ON ANOTHER NOTE: It's nice to see the NHL back up and running after its All-Star break.  While the All-Star weekend was fun to watch (would have been even more fun to be there), it's great to have the games that actually count back on. Game on!

Speaking of the NHL, check out Matt Long hanging in the NY Rangers locker room with MICHAEL DEL ZOTTO, BRANDON PRUST and STEVE EMINGER after last night's shootout loss to Pittsburgh!

NEW BEERS ON TAP!  With the Super Bowl approaching this week, we've brought on board some new beers with a "regional" feel to honor the two teams (Pittsburgh and Green Bay); All three beers are highly rated, and pretty damn good.  They are:

Victory Prima Pils A highly regarded German Pilsner based out of Pennsylvania. If you are a fan of pilsner beers, you simply cannot go wrong with the Prima Pils.  I personally am not a big fan of pilsner beers but found myself actually enjoying this one. The fact that it's a German-style pilsner graded this high and made here in the States is yet another reason to try it for yourself.  ($6/12oz. bottle- 5.3% ABV).

Troegs Nugget Nectar Another gem of a beer from the company who brought us the devilishly awesome Mad Elf over the holidays.  While this particular beer isn't as potent as the Elf (7.5% ABV vs Mad Elf's 11% ABV), this American Ale is just as intriguing.  It carries a very distinct, fruity aroma with a taste to match but it doesn't overwhelm you, making it easy to drink.  Definitely a must-have.  ($7/pint).

Oskar Blues Old Chub This Colorado based brewing company is very popular in the Midwest and for good reason: They consistently produce a damn good product.  This particular offering, a Scottish Ale, pours dark like a Guinness, yet has a very smooth and chocolate/caramel sweetness to it. Not enough to make you stop at one or two, mind you.  But just enough of a balance to make you drink more than a few.  And at 8.0% ABV, it has a very deceptive kick to it.  You don't notice the bang until you've had a few.  And be honest, how do you not love the name "Old Chub"?  A nice, drinkable brew for the winter months. ($6/12oz. can)

So make a point to try out our new offerings this weekend during the Super Bowl while you're cheering on your favorite team!

TONIGHT: Pub Trivia returns with another fun night of competition! Great prizes up for grabs and as always, free to play!  Get here early as seats fill up quickly.  Fun starts at 8pm.

Cheers!
