TALE OF TWO CITIES...

Photo: CBC Sports

The NY Rangers won again last night, this time on the road against a gritty Minnesota Wild team.  With the win, the Blueshirts continued to hold on to the top spot in the NHL Eastern Conference and within striking distance of the President's Cup.  This team has played well all season and even with it's most recent "slump", they've managed to hold on to its place in the standings and looking more and more like the team to beat in the East.  Can we finally say "Shades of '94"?

In the meantime, the Montreal Canadiens lost again, this time in a shootout on home ice to the Florida Panthers.  It was painful to see on a couple of levels:  For starters, the victory gave the Panthers a season sweep over the Habs for the first time in their history.  Second, it continued the Habs miserable play at home this season (currently 14-15-10).  And worst of all, they are playing for the draft lottery and tee times at the local golf course.  This will be the first season that I won't have the Habs to cheer for in the playoffs and it's going to be a weird feeling.  Even with all of that, I still look forward to seeing them play this Friday vs the Rangers at Madison Square Garden (now that's loyalty).

On another note, we had some hockey royalty in the house last night as Hockey Hall Of Famer Bill Torrey, architect of the NY Islanders Stanley Cup dynasty and former president of the Florida Panthers graced us with his presence.

In any case, the playoffs begin two weeks from today and between the NY Rangers & the NJ Devils, the locals will have a lot to look forward to.  Playoff hockey season here is pretty intense and I am definitely looking forward to having all of the games at the bar.  Let's hope for a long run for the locals!
