THIRD and LONG VI DRAFT COMPLETE!

Last night I got together with some of the regulars online for our annual Third and Long Fantasy Football Draft, (our sixth season). In the past five years there's only been two winners of our league- I won the first three years, while STIFFLER won the last two. So there's a couple of things working here: The obvious bragging rights and ego boost between the two alpha-males, myself and STIFFLER, and the eager beavers anxious to kick us off the top of the hill (the rest of the league). League members include BREW CREW stalwarts T-BILL, SILENT BOB, MR. CHIPS, STIFFLER, and GOLDIE and a few new members (or fresh meat as I like to call it), which makes for an interesting new season. Aside from the obvious finanical windfall for winning this thing, the bragging rights is key. There's nothing like gloating to your friends about how good you are and how they suck. It's a man thing I guess, no other way to explain it.

Now that we've drafted our teams and given it the "once over", it's time to settle in and really get into the NFL season (which officially begins tomorrow)! Damn I can't wait!

TONIGHT: "GAME NIGHT" with the Nintendo Wii, board games and other suprises for our favorite patrons. Heineken Light Buckets 5/$15.00 for everyone!!! There's also a TEAM in TRAINING fund raiser (6pm-9pm), with special drink deals being offered to those who buy a drink bracelet. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training^® is the world's largest endurance sports training program. The program provides training to run or walk marathons and half marathons or participate in triathlons and century (100-mile) bike rides. Since 1988, more than 360,000 volunteer participants have helped raise more than $850 million. A very good cause indeed. All are welcome.

And finally, I want to wish a very special Happy Birthday to our dear friend Matt Long (aka IRON-MAN pictured above with FRENCHY) who turns 42 today. Matt, you look bigger, better and stronger with each passing day! Happy birthday and enjoy your day!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

I want to first off, take time to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day and that you take some time to remember those who gave their lives for our country over the course of our history.

Secondly, Time-Warner finally came through and took care of my cable/Internet woes this morning. They were scheduled to come by between the dreaded 8am-12noon time block. Fortunately for me, they arrived on the early end of the time block, showing up at around 9am. As I mentioned before, apparently someone cut our lines on the roof, thus knocking out power in our building. The Time-Warner tech guy was very nice and took care of the problem in about an hour. Now that I am back up and running, I can get back to the important things in life- like blogging!

Last week, it was reported here that yours truly made TIME OUT NY magazine (again). This time, I vented about the lack of coverage by the magazine of the other wonderful neighborhoods in NYC, since they always seem to cover the same old small group of "trendy" nabes, such as Tribeca, The Meatpacking District, LES and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Bar will be open today at 4pm, just in time for DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS!!! Don't forget to catch Game 2 of the STANLEY CUP, featuring Detroit (up 1-0) vs Pittsburgh tonight at 8pm! You can also catch the Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA tonight with Boston holding a 2-1 lead over Detroit. That's an 8pm start as well.

Since I had no access to cable yesterday, I finally got to check out the much-ballyhooed "Iron Man" at the Kips Bay Movie Theatre. First of all, I was not a happy camper when I found out that the price of admission had gone up to $12.00!!!! TWELVE BUCKS for a friggin' movie??? This is getting crazy. First you have to pay an extra $15.00 for your first piece of luggage when you fly; now you gotta pay $12.00 for a movie ticket. When does the madness end???

In any case, I went into this movie feeling a bit skeptical, much of it due to the fact that most comic heroes don't seem to translate well onto the big screen. And growing up, I was never much of an Iron Man fan (I was a big fan of the Silver Surfer, Spider-Man and Sub-Mariner back in the day). Then when I heard that Jon Favereau was directing the film, all I could think of was "camp". Didn't expect much at all.

However, I have to say, I was very impressed. Impressed with the way the introduced the characters; Impressed with the way it attempted to stay true to the character; Impressed with the casting of the main characters (really liked Jeff Bridges and Gweneth Paltrow, btw). And finally, kudos to Robert Downey, Jr. who did a great job with the lead character. Very likable. If you haven't seen it (though I think I may be the only one in America who hadn't seen it yet), definitely worth a look. Very entertaining.
